I recently changed my black ink cartridge and everything was ok but now I am getting an error message to replace it. I've tried going into settings through the IP address but there is no preferences option. Can anyone help?

Hi @jacko3,
When you enable cartridge protection the printer stamps the cartridge chip with the printer serial number, there is a chance you can still use them but only if you have not printed more than 20 pages with the new printer.
If you have printed 20 pages or less on the new printer, you can take out the setup cartridges that you used to initialize the printer, seal them so they don't dry out and put in the cartridges that are protected. These protected cartridges will recognize that this is a new printer and they will work with no issue.
I suggest sealing the setup cartridges because they would have been used already to initialize the printer and once that process occurs those cartridges are now called trade cartridges, the equivalent of regular cartridges that can be purchased at the store. After the protected cartridges are depleted put your trade cartridges back in and use up the ink in them.
If however you have already printed more than 20 pages on the new printer, I hate to say, they will not work there is just no nicer way to say it.
Unless, do you have the printer that the cartridges were in when the cartridge protection was enabled? If so you can get the IP address, if it is on your wireless network, enter the IP address into an Internet browser and disable the cartridge protection. It will look something like the image below.
Edit:
NOTE: Disabling the cartridges in the Embedded Web Server will impact future cartridges from being protected. Disable Cartridge Protection: Future cartridges will not be protected. Currently installed and previously protected cartridges will remain protected.
You mentioned you are getting an error to replace your black cartridge when you install a new black pen, perhaps the following document will help: HP Officejet J6400 All-in-One Series - Cannot Insert Print Cartridge. Although this error may not be the same as what you are seeing, the solutions presented might help. 🙂
I hope this helps.

Hi Sunshyn2005,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, i have perhaps not explained properly. The printer is not new it is the cartridge. I bought recycled cartridges as they are much cheaper and I'ver never had any problem with them up until now. However, I put a different cartridge in and it was recognised and accepted even although it is identical.
Would still be useful to know if the cartrdge recocnition can be disabled though.

Hi @jacko3,
Based on your latest description, the simplest answer is, you will not be able to disable cartridge protection. You might consider returning the cartridge from where you purchased them and explaining that they can't be used due to the cartridge protection that somebody seems to have enabled.
