Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

May I please be advised on how to correct printer or ink system error in HP Officejet PRO 8600 Plus? There was an error message regarding depleted black ink and this was replaced with a new black ink cartridge bought directly from HP and the problem has persisted. Thanks for your help.

Hi @Diadi7, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Printer or Ink System Error" on the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (N911g) can be caused by various factors, including cartridge recognition issues, printhead problems, or firmware glitches. Since you've already replaced the black ink cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge, try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Reset the Printer

A simple reset can sometimes clear ink system errors.

  1. Turn OFF the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait 2-3 minutes to allow any residual charge to dissipate.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it ON.
  4. Check if the error persists.

Clean the Printhead and Cartridges

Ink system errors may occur due to a clogged or faulty printhead.

  1. Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  2. Remove all ink cartridges carefully.
  3. Inspect for leaks, ink buildup, or dried ink on the cartridge contacts.
  4. Using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges.
  5. Also clean the printhead contacts where the cartridges connect.
  6. Let everything dry completely, then reinstall the cartridges.

Remove and Manually Reseat the Printhead

  1. Turn ON the printer and open the cartridge door.
  2. Remove all ink cartridges.
  3. Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the entire printhead.
  4. Wipe the electrical contacts on the back of the printhead using a soft, damp cloth.
  5. Reseat the printhead and lock the latch firmly.
  6. Reinstall the cartridges and restart the printer.

Update the Printer Firmware

If your printer firmware is outdated, it may not recognize new cartridges correctly.

  1. Download the latest firmware from HP official website:
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Firmware
  2. Install the update and restart the printer.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset (Last Resort)

If the issue persists, a semi-full reset can restore the printer to factory defaults.

  1. Turn OFF the printer.
  2. Press and hold “Back” (arrow key) + “Home” + “Help” buttons together.
  3. While holding the buttons, turn the printer ON.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and select "Semi-Full Reset".

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
