I just bought an HP Envy 5012 today. I got it home and while the software was installing on my laptop (I have Ubuntu) I tried loading some ink and paper. I had a bit of difficulty getting the paper tray open but when I did and inserted some paper it just said paper tray is open. I tried opening it and closing it again, removed the paper, shut it down and restarted it, and all it would say is that the paper tray is open.

Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Make sure there are no obstructions in the paper tray path and it is pushed all the way in.
To know how to load papers into the tray, refer to this document.
Also, check for any jams inside the printer. Refer to the steps mentioned in this document.

I am having the same problem. Bought my hp envy 5012 and can’t Finish setting it up because it keeps saying paper tray not closed. I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

That's unfortunate. If the issue persists, please contact our HP Support team for Service Options as it could be a possible hardware issue:
1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.
6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.
