Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My cartridges ran out and i replaced both the colour and the black  with brand new HP ones (56 and 57) and the printer is stuck in calibration mode.  I cant get out of that mode and the only thing i can do is switch off the printer. As soon as i turn the printer on again it comes up with message "printer calibration.load plain paper then press ok" i press ok and it loads a piece of plain white paper and then repeats the message.

i have tried taking the cartridges out and paper, made sure there was no jams. Move the paper slider and switched the printer off and disconnected the power and waited several minutes and press the on bottom to discharge any power remaining.  I plug it back in and switch it on and get the same message again.  I can not access the menu and unable to print either now.  Please help

Hi @gg1234635,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Re-seat the Cartridges:

  • Open the cartridge door and remove the cartridges.
  • Reinsert the cartridges, making sure they are firmly seated in their correct positions.
  • Close the cartridge door and attempt the calibration process again.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure that the cartridges you have used are compatible HP cartridges (HP 56 and 57).
  • Verify that the protective tape on the new cartridges has been removed completely.

Load Paper Properly:

  • Ensure that plain, A4-size paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray.
  • Adjust the paper width guide so that it fits snugly against the edges of the paper without bending it.

Perform a Manual Calibration:

  • If the automatic calibration continues to loop, try performing a manual alignment through the printer's control panel options (refer to your user manual for detailed instructions).

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Make sure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can download any updates from the HP Support site.

Reset Factory Defaults:

  • Some printers have an option to reset to factory defaults in the printer settings. This might help resolve persistent issues.

I hope this helps.

I have done a hard reset.

I have taken the cartridges in and out multiple times before and after a hard reset.

They are the correct ones and are genuine HP cartridges

I have already tried and check the paper tray and moved the arm to make sure it is in the correct position

As soon as the printer has turned on it want to do a calibration page.  I click on OK on the panel and pulls a piece of paper through.  It either stops and repeats the message again or spits the paper out and then comes up with the same message.

I am unable to access any menu on the printer itself when it has this message up, the only thing i can do is switch off the printer.

all this time the led is flashing red at a normal speed

This is all at the printer itself.

If i connect up a computer/laptop via USB (only connectivity option) and try and print. the printer completely locks up and the led on it flashes red/yellow at the same time and very fast.

Is there a way to stop the printer wanting to do an automatic calibration/override

Hi @gg1234635,

Thank you for the response.

Since those steps didn't work, Here's what you can try next.

Clean Cartridge Contacts & Printer Contacts

Even if they’re new, debris or dried ink on the contacts can confuse the printer:

Power off the printer and unplug it.

Remove both cartridges.

Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean:

The gold contacts on the cartridges.

The corresponding contacts inside the cartridge carriage (not the nozzles).

Let everything dry completely (5 minutes), and reinsert cartridges.

Try an Alignment Override/Sensor Reset (Hidden Button Combo):

The HP Photosmart 7762 may respond to a special key combo that resets internal NVRAM or bypasses alignment mode:

With the printer powered off, hold the Cancel + Left Arrow buttons (or in some models, OK + Cancel) together.

While holding them, press the Power button.

Keep holding the other two buttons for 10 seconds after powering on.

Release and wait. This sometimes forces a hard NVRAM reset or skips alignment.

If the above key combo doesn't work, try this alternative:
Press and hold OK + Cancel + Black (or Color) Copy while powering on.

Try Printing from PC Without USB First

Don’t plug in the USB just yet, plug the printer into power only, turn it on after the reset, and let it complete the startup. Then plug it into the PC.

If you have access to the HP Toolbox software, it may allow you to cancel or manually complete calibration from the PC, provided the printer gets detected even momentarily.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.

I have checked both the cartridges and they look completely fine but did give them a clean the contacts in the cartridge holder.

This made no difference

I have tried both key combinations but neither work ( printer will not switch on with those button pressed).

The printer goes straight into "printer calibration. load plain paper then press ok"  It pulls in piece of paper and then repeats the same message again.

Still not able to access any of the menu items and still not able to print locally to the printer as none of the buttons works on the printer other then "ok" which then repeats the message and the on/off button.

Still will not print via usb from windows 10 or windows 11 machine.

please advise
