HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I installed a new HP printer cartridge and my printer still shows the need to change the cartridge (low volume) but the HP app shows printer ink. I am getting an ER 11 error and flashing "!" in yellow. I am NOT on the printer cartridge program.  I can't find that error message anywhere and my printer has basically shut down after the installation of this new cartridge. I could really use some help! TIA!

Hi @Warrior1975

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds incredibly frustrating—especially when you’ve done everything right by installing a new cartridge, and the printer still refuses to cooperate. Let’s work through this together and get your LaserJet MFP M234sdwe back in action.

⚠️ What ER 11 Typically Means

The ER 11 error usually points to a cartridge/Toner recognition issue—either the printer isn’t detecting the cartridge properly, or it’s rejecting it due to compatibility or firmware-related checks.

🛠️ Steps to Resolve ER 11 and the Flashing Yellow “!” Light

1. Power Drain and Cartridge Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Remove the toner cartridge.
  • Wait 5 minutes.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly—make sure it clicks into place.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.

2. Inspect the Cartridge

  • Check for any protective tape or packaging that might still be attached.
  • Look for damaged contacts or debris on the cartridge.
  • If possible, gently clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth.

3. Confirm Cartridge Compatibility

  • Make sure the cartridge is genuine and compatible with your printer model.
  • Some firmware versions may block third-party or previously protected cartridges.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Software & Drivers page for your printer.
  • Download and install the latest firmware using a USB connection.
  • This can help resolve recognition issues caused by outdated firmware.

If the error persists even after trying another toner.

Let me know how far you get with these steps—I’ll be right here to help you through the next move. You’ve got this! 💪
