Hi,
I wanted to print in black & white but my printer always prints in colour when there is an image in the document, this is really annoying because when i go printer properties i press black and white or press black ink only then when i press save, i go back into printer properties to find its back to colour, no matter how many times i put it to black and white it goes back to colour. I tried pressing black and white and not going back on printer properties but it still prints in colour. Also i changed my default printer settings to black and white through control panel and press save. When i go into control panel , printer properties its saved as black and white default, so thats good. But for some reason when theres coloured text or an image on the page i want to print i cant change to print in black and white, just keeps reverting back to colour.
Please help me!

Hello @Matthew002, Hope you are well!
Thank you for joining HP support forums, I would like to help 🙂
I understand that you are having issues while printing in black and white and also the printer is going “Offline”.
Going through your post, this could be an issue with the printer drivers. In that case, we might need to uninstall the drivers and re-install the same.
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/en5640/Basic_Webpack_x64-40.2.1073-EN5640_Basicx64... and install the printer drivers.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted.
Now try changing the printing preferences:
- Go to control panel – Devices and printers – Give a right click on Envy 5640 and select printing preferences.
- In the pop-up window, click on “Advanced” button - check for printing in grayscale option. Make sure it is turned on
PS: Your printer supports single cartridge mode. Hence if you want to completely stop printing in color you can take out the color cartridge and use only the black one.
Let me know if that helps. Good luck!
Cheers 🙂

Hi Dvortex,
I am soo happy right now :smileyhappy:, the problem is fixed. You are like the best Hp empolyee. Thanks so much for your help, you cant imagine how happy i am, always printing pictures in colour when unnecessary was just wasting alot of my ink since the pictures were high resolution and alot of colour in it which probably wasted alot of ink. So thanks again for the clear instructions and for the fast reply.
Kind regards,
Matthew
