Officejet Pro 8600 Plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus that I'm I've been pleased with until now. After gettting low ink warnings on the M and Y inks I replaced them with genuine HP cartridges (951XL) but I got an error that reads "The following cartridges are not intended for use in this printer". What?! If I replace the new cartridges with the old it says they are low on ink but no "compatibility" problem. I tried cleaning the contacts on both the printhead and the cartridges and it didn't help.  I called HP and they sent me replacement cartridges (M and Y) and I got the same error! It's very frustrating because HP, in their wisdom, shuts down ALL functions of the printer. I can't even scan or print in black ink. I can't even get to the menu. I also updated the firmware.  I called HP again and they said that the printer is out of warranty and can't be fixed so I should just scrap it and buy a new one. **bleep**? Trash an otherwise good printer just because HP insists on locking up my options?  I am very frustrated and angry at HP and will not buy another HP printer if I can't find a solution to this.

I finally found a solution. The depleted cartridges did not trigger the "incompatible ink" message so I used a refill kit (commonly found online) and walla, it worked! Only the new cartridges purchased from Costco and directly from HP fail.

Thank you, KrazyToad. I have not yet received any communication from HP regarding this.I'll wait another few days. I figured out how to use it as a scanner but still no printing options.

Well, I did finally hear from someone at HP support. They basically said my printer is not repairable but they did offer to help me buy ink for my next printer. This was my reply:

It is more than disappointing that HP is willing to turn my printer into trash in order to maintain their grasp on my ink purchases. You say it's a "hardware" problem but I know enough about these things to know that firmware can override this.   Yes, I will trash my printer and take your offer for free ink for my next printer. It is    Brother INKvestmentTank Inkjet Printer, MFC-J995DW XL   Naturally I will not be buying an HP product.

Sandytechy, I've already provided all of that info. The reply is that my printer can't be fixed because it's out of warranty. I am beyond pissed that an otherwise fully functioning printer (scan, fax all works fine) won't print B&W pages because it thinks a genuine HP color cartridge is incompatible. It is ecologically and economically irresponsible.  THIS IS HP's corporate decision to make a product obsolete so people will buy a new printer and ink. I'm not interested in a discount on a new HP printer or ink because I will not buy another HP product.

If it could be made to print with just black ink I'd like to donate it to a school or shelter. I have several full ink cartridges that cost me about $100 that are now worthless to me. If you can't come up with a better solution than a copy and paste reply let's just drop this. You've lost a customer and I'm out money and a printer. I've already purchased a new Brother inkjet printer (MFC-J995DW).

See my previous post- my inoperabble cartridges are only to be used in US!!!!! My operational cartridges stated they were only to be used elsewhere- Figure!!!!

At least someone from HP responded, but typical of today's customer service, it was out of warranty, buy a new product.  I've not been happy with HP products- need to buy an Epson or Brother product next time around.  My last HP PC was a Toshiba laptop and a miniMAC ago.  I've been much happier.  HP Printers always had a better reputation, but ever since they have tried to automate cartridge replacements through the web, I have not been a happy camper.  I had similar issues with wifi competing with the web, and  I eventually hardwired the printer to my computer.   Too much control on how I print from "upstairs"-  Kind of like the Boeing software over riding the pilots.

I did like the ability to replace each color cartridge when it was depeleted, rather than replace everything- but support is sketchy, and I encounter problems routinely.

If you consider “don’t buy HP products” a solution then yes, the problem has been solved.
