HP Envy 4500

I had to change over the ink cartridge on our HP Envy 4500, and after putting the cartridge in, it says it needs replacement. Constant attempts to fix it, and now I'm being told the cartridge isn't compatible. I desperately need a working black ink cartridge in 14 hours, otherwise we're going to face a complete administrative failure.

To save HP's army of bots asking the same question:

-Model is a HP Envy 4500, connected wirelessly to a Bang & Olufsen Envy running Windows 11

-No, I haven't changed any settings

-Yes, the old, empty cartridge still works

Hi @BillBrew ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing compatibility issues with the new ink cartridge.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

  • Ensure Proper Installation: Double-check that the new ink cartridge is properly installed. Sometimes, cartridges may not be seated correctly, leading to recognition issues. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it firmly into the cartridge slot.
  • Clean Contacts: Sometimes, the contacts on the cartridge or within the printer may be dirty or obstructed, preventing proper communication. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
  • Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer and resolve minor issues.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date.  Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Try Another Cartridge: If possible, try using another new ink cartridge to see if the issue persists. The cartridge itself may be faulty.

I hope this helps.
