HP LaserJet M209dw Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I have owned the M209DW printer for almost 2 years. It is connected via LAN and worked perfectly up to and including yesterday. Since today, only a flashing orange light appears in the status bar a few seconds after starting. I already found  and ried this: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Wireless-Networking-Internet/HP-LaserJet-M209dw-Orange-Light/m... => I performed the factory reset several times. Unfortunately, it didn't help.

In the first few seconds after switching on, the printer is still visible on the network and can be pinged, but as soon as it flashes orange, it is no longer accessible. I also tried it with a USB cable, same behavior: The printer can be found for a few seconds and then can no longer be found, Windows then reports a USB error.

Print and Scan Doctor => the printer goes offline before the tool has finished its diagnosis.

Does anyone else have an idea what I can do? Many thanks in advance.

Hi @Eisbaer2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP LaserJet M209dw printer is experiencing a hardware or firmware-related issue. The fact that the orange light starts blinking and the printer goes offline regardless of the connection method (LAN or USB) suggests a deeper problem. Here's a list of troubleshooting steps you can follow to identify and resolve the issue.

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source and disconnect all cables (USB/LAN).
  • Wait at least 5 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the issue persists.

Check for Paper Jams or Internal Blockages

  • Open the printer and inspect for paper jams or debris.
  • Ensure the toner cartridge is properly seated.
  • Close the printer securely.

Update the Printer Firmware

Since the printer connects for a few seconds after powering on, you might have a small window to update the firmware:

  • Download the latest firmware for your printer from the HP Support website.
  • During the brief period the printer is online, use HP Firmware Updater or a manual firmware update tool.
  • If the update doesn’t complete before the printer goes offline, try again.

Factory Reset with a Different Method

Perform a full factory reset using the embedded web server (EWS) or the control panel:

  • Disconnect the printer from LAN and USB.
  • Follow your printer’s manual for a cold reset (specific sequence of buttons to reset deeper settings).

Test Without LAN or USB

Disconnect the printer from all networks and cables.

  • Turn it on with no external connections.
  • Check if the orange blinking still occurs. If it does, it’s likely a hardware or firmware fault.

Test with a Static IP Address

If the issue seems network-related:

  • Connect the printer to the network using an Ethernet cable.
  • Assign a static IP address to the printer from your router settings.
  • Ping the printer again during the initial connection period.

Inspect Power Supply

An unstable power source can cause erratic behavior:

  • Plug the printer into a different outlet.
  • Avoid using power strips or surge protectors temporarily.

USB Issue on Windows

If Windows reports a USB error:

  • Ensure the USB cable is less than 6 feet and in good condition.
  • Try a different USB port on your PC.
  • Check Windows Device Manager for any driver conflicts or errors.
    • Uninstall and reinstall the HP printer drivers if necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Raj_05, thanks for your suggestions. I tried everything. Didn't change anything. The firmware update didn't work, the orange blinking light comes to early so the update process is just started.

Seems to be a sudden hardware defect 😞

Very sad, I was quite happy with this printer and now it "died" after just 20 months...
