My Windows 10 screens don't look/follow your instructions. I can right-click Start, then click Device Manager, and can find my way to my printer. However, I don't have Options to select "color." But when I look at the printer properties, I see it's set to print color. It was that way before I did the second uninstall/reinstall. I'm wondering whether the computer is missing a command, a piece of code, or something else that prevents the printer from printing color. Or does the printer's software control everything? Sorry this didn't make a difference. Thank you.

Apparently there aren't/weren't any firmware updates for my printer since my printer didn't appear in the window in step 8. I'm going to forget about this issue. I appreciate your responses, especially since you're the only one who offered suggestions.

This might require remote access of the computer to fix the issue.
I request you to talk to HP support.
They might have multiple options to help you with this.
- Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
- Select the country.
- Enter the serial of your device.
- Select the country from the drop-down.
- Click on "Show Options".
- Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
I hope that helps.

If you have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer driver, follow the below steps:
Change the bellow settings to print in color.
- Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer that you want to use, and then click Printing preferences.
- Make your choices, and then click OK.
- Under option Print color select color , then the OK button."
So I was able to print fine 4 days ago. Today I tried to print the same thing I printed 4 days ago and it will not print in color. I went through all of the steps in both solutions in this thread and by golly now I can't print anything. In addition to all of this garbage, I also developed the same issue as the user above where I need to power cycle the printer to "wake it up". This issue was an issue with my ex-wife's HP printer for years. Honestly I feel like a chump for thinking this one would be different somehow.
As for this specific solution, I have no option under printing preferences to Print color. Can we get an actual solution to this, or can I get my money back for a printer that just gives up the ghost 3 months 100 pages in?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Based on a 2015 inquiry I found online for the same problem printing to a Xerox printer, the response was to install a Windows 7 driver for the Officejet 3830. Interesting...so I uninstalled my Windows 10 driver, found the HP driver for Windows 7, and was able to print color from MSWord. Apparently the HP driver for Windows 10 is missing something. This appears to be a loooong-standing problem since I could find this issue dating back at least three YEARS.

I had problems with Windows 10 printing to my 3830. What ended up working for me was to totally unintall my printer driver, then go to HP's site to install a Windows 7 version of the driver for the 3830. I can now print color from Office.
