Envy 5055
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Envy 5055 is brand new. It prints Word documents and e-mails fine, but when I try to print a web page (for example, a recipe), it stops after printing about one inch, and my laptop (HP running Windows 10) says the printer has an Error (no additional info). There is no error message on the printer screen.

I have run the HP Print & Scan Doctor numerous times. It always says the problem is a software update which it's fixed, but nothing changes. I've tried printing the web pages off Chrome and Microsoft Edge with the same results. I've tried an earlier posted solution--adding a local printer--but the instructions don't work on my laptop with Windows 10. HELP!

Thank you, Dragon-Fur, for all this very helpful information. I was on the verge of returning the printer, but when I was trying to print a web page one last time, I was standing in front of the printer and noticed that, after it printed an inch or so, the screen said "Cancelling." So I searched these boards for problems with printers cancelling a print job, rather than not printing, and a solution popped up. I had to create a new port for the printer with the printer's IP address. The instructions were very easy.

I'm not sure why this didn't happen automatically when I installed the printer, or why the Print & Scan Doctor didn't suggest this. But at least it looks like my new printer is finally functional.

Thank you again for your help!

I likely do not have anything to add to what you already know (or have discovered).

First off, if you have not done so, download-save-install the Full Feature Software for your printer

HP ENVY 5000 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver

After software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Consider updating the Firmware

HP ENVY 5000 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

If / After firmware is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC / Foxit Reader)

Discussion

In general, things like recipes (train and plane tickets, and other odd content) may not print because the printer cannot translate the content on the webpage into anything the printer understands.

One thing to try for "stuff that will not print" from a website is to download the content into a PDF file and print that.

If the PDF file won't print all the content, print the PDF file as an image.  This should work simply because printing as an image requires no "translation" of the content.

Open the offending PDF file in Adobe Reader DC > File > Print > Advanced >>

  1. Set the printer select the colors (Optional)
  2. Print the PDF file as an image

and / or

Create a Snip of the information on the page > save the snipped image as a .jpg file > print that file.

Open the file in image viewing software (for example Paint (mspaint)) and print the image.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Yes, I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the Full Feature Software.

I also updated the software on the printer, using an option on the printer's screen.

I also tried using Microsoft Edge instead of Chrome.

The HP Print & Scan Doctor recommended the "Troubleshoot HP Installation Failure Tool," but after taking it through several steps, including hard-wiring my laptop to the printer, it told me my printer isn't supported by the tool.

I tried updating the firmware as you suggested, but when I get to the screen that says "Select the printer you wish to update," my printer shows but I cannot check the box. (I disabled my firewall while trying to do this.) It says the printer is up-to-date; perhaps that's why I can't check the box.

Both my husband and I are still having problems printing. Ironically, both our laptops are HPs--you'd think they'd play together nicely. We get "Printer error" when printing Excel and PowerPoint documents as well as web pages and PDF documents. Sometimes unplugging and replugging the printer helps (this is what the HP Print & Scan Doctor recommends); sometimes it doesn't.

I should also note that I get a message on my laptop that "Scan to computer is currenlty unavailable" although I can scan.

I appreciate the suggestions of work-arounds for printing online documents, but I shouldn't have to deal with work-arounds for a brand new printer.

Any further advice would be appreciated.

You are welcome.

Please ignore any suggestions that do not fit your need or fall within your comfort zone.  We are a "user" community, that is, owners and users of HP Technology - our suggestions, aside those taken directly from / in HP documentation, are yours for the taking (or refusing).

Scan to Computer is only used to support the "walk up" to the printer and scan to the computer from the printer.  The message, the software, any issue(s),  are not related to your being able to use scan software on the computer.

Disabling the ScanToPCActivationApp feature is a reasonable step if you do not scan from the printer to the computer and / or you cannot find / repair the underlying cause of the problem (that causes the application to stop working).

Edge is notorious for not "playing well" with others.  Nonetheless, generally speaking, it is usually possible to print from the Edge browser.  Edge is better than it was and continues to improve.

Chrome has its own idiosyncrasies - if you have used the browser for any length of time, you are aware of its fussy bits that involve printing.

All browsers can have problems with certain kinds of content, though it is quite unusual to have trouble with most types of jobs printed from the browser.

It sounds like there is a communication issue (network?) or there is something that is causing the printer to actually fail to complete the many jobs that are sent to it from the two different computers.

Remember that Adobe Reader DC must be installed on the computer along with the Full Feature Software.

The printer hardware is covered under warranty.  If you feel the fault is within the printer instead of your network and / or your environment, you should certainly contact HP Technical Support.
