New out of box. I am able to print from my network but I can't copy.
When I load the feeder it displays "Document loaded in document feeder" but when I press "Copy" the grey rectangle surrounding the Copy button brightens but nothing else happens.  If I put paper on the flat scanner when I press "Copy" the grey rectangle surrounding the Copy button brightens but nothing else happens.

@tw3retiree, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

I understand how frustrating this must be, especially with a brand-new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301cdw. Since you’re able to print fine but can’t make copies, the problem lies in the scanner subsystem or firmware control rather than the print mechanism itself. Let’s go through some steps to fix it:

Power Reset and Hardware Initialization

Turn off the printer.

Disconnect the power cable from the rear.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug the power cable directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).

Turn on the printer and wait until it reaches the Ready state.

Try the Copy function again from the control panel (without connecting to the computer).

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Run Scanner Hardware Self-Test

This verifies if the scanner lamp and sensor are functional.

On the control panel, go to Settings → Reports → Demo Page or Scanner Test Page.

If the scanner doesn’t respond even for the self-test, it indicates a scanner initialization failure.

Perform a Factory Reset

If the printer still won’t copy:

Tap Settings → General → Reset → Restore Factory Defaults.

Confirm and allow the printer to restart.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi and try copying again (without any computer connection).

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your help. I can't say for sure if it was the simple reboot, or plugging directly into the wall but its working now and I appreciate your help.   tww
