HP Deskjet 1512 All-in-One Printer

Using a 2023 MacBook Pro that only has usb-c ports; cable supplied with Printer is not ethernet. Has a straight USB port so  must use a dongle to connect it to my Mac. Recognizes printer but EVERY print job turns into “waiting for printer to become available” and nothing ever prints.

Printer is hp Deskjet 1512 Serial [Personal Information Removed]  It is NOT a wireless printer so my only option is cable connect.

MacOS = Sonoma 14.4

Hi @Randy28164,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing some difficulties getting your HP Deskjet 1512 printer to work with your MacBook Pro via a dongle and USB connection. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check Printer Connection: Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the dongle, and that the dongle is properly inserted into your MacBook Pro's USB-C port.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connection issues. Try restarting both your printer and your MacBook Pro.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your MacBook Pro. You can usually download these from the HP website. Updated drivers can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
  • Check Printer Queue: Open the print queue on your MacBook Pro to see if there are any stuck print jobs. If so, try canceling them and then resend a new print job to see if it goes through.
  • Reset Printing System: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, right-click on the printer, and select "Reset printing system." Then, re-add the printer and try printing again.
  • Try Different USB Port or Dongle: If you have another USB-C port or dongle available, try using that to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, the problem could be with the specific port or dongle you're using.
  • Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the printer is set as the default printer in your MacBook Pro's settings. Also, check the printer settings to make sure it's not set to offline mode.
  • Test with Another Device: If possible, try connecting the printer to another computer (preferably one with a standard USB port) to see if it works correctly. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or your MacBook Pro setup.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP Deskjet 1512 printer not printing from your MacBook Pro.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Alden,
Thank you for your help! You shared many viable solutions, but unfortunately none solve this printing issue. According to Apple Support, the problem is overarching—it's an OS bug when printing through a USB connection. It's affecting other printer brands as well, not just HP. Because my HP DJ1512 is neither wireless nor ethernet capable, the USB is my only connection option, so aside from buying a new printer, I’m in a holding pattern until there is a solve.

Apple asked me to submit screen shots and cursor workflows for their engineering file. I’m running Sonoma 14.4. At this point there is not a solution.

Many thanks to you and all in this Community who offered tips, solutions, ideas, etc. All were extremely useful/valuable.
