If you have an older version of Mac OS, you need to download (CNET is probably best source, but HP may override that for older versions like yours) the driver version that matches your OS.  The 3.0 version mentioned here is probably too new for your version, so your challenge will be to find a matching version and install that.

When it matches your OS, you'll see both printing and scanning tabs in the Printer dialog you get by following the path I gave in an earlier response.

So, I just ran across this problem.  I didn't read these later message, but it made me sad that I couldn't connect my HP Color Laserjet CM1312nfi MFP to my MacMini to use as a server machine in the house.  It was a computer that NEVER had HP drivers prior to upgrading to Yosemite, so it had no clue about the scanner.  Nothing I tried worked until I did what I thought I should have tried the moment I saw the latest installer refused to run.

I booted from an external hard drive with OS X 10.6 on it.

I installed the drivers, and everything worked fine... but, this wasn't the internal hard drive and it was an entirely different OS install.  I didn't want to go back to 10.6, and I wasn't sure what upgrading it to Yosemite would do again.

So, I simply REBOOTED to Yosemite and then went into the "/Library/" folder on the 10.6 install.

I went into these folders and copied the files that appeared to be related to "HP" or "Scanner":

* Image Capture - Devices. Support, TWAIN

* Preferences - Hewlett-Packard Preferences

* Printers - hp

* Receipts - HPCore*, HPScan*, HP Photosmart*

I also went into /Applications/ and copied these:

* Hewlett-Packard

* HP LaserJet MFP

And, what do you know?

Everything worked PERFECTLY. (Well, almost...*)

For good measure, before all this, I had downloaded the DMG file with the full feature support for the OS X version that still supported the full features.  The install claimed not to be supported for my operating system, so I copied the file to my desktop and right-clicked on it and selected "Show Package Contents".  I drilled down to Content/Packages/ and double-clicked and ran each package that would execute until it was done.

I successfully stuck a photo on the scanner (printer connected via USB) and then went to the HP Scan app and scanned it in and saved it to the documents folder.  Everything works perfectly.

How crazy is that?  Even HP Director shows all the functions highlighted.

*What wasn't working:

* Scanner didn't show up in Preview or Image Capture apps

* Scanner didn't show up in Sharing section of System Preferences

Just a little bothersome, but my story is NOT a guide, its just a story.

Follow at your OWN RISK.

Wonderful that it works!

It just goes to show that it's not rocket science and sometimes the devs at HP try to package solutions as a whole (all-or-nothing approach), when all that is really needed is to fix a piece or a part.
