Hi @Glowzinski85,
I wonder, do you have the scan to computer enabled in the software? If you can check that for me by opening HP Utility, then going to Scan to Computer under Settings, then look for enable Scan to Computer. If this is already enabled let me know and we can try to determine what the root cause might be.

Is it possible that the printer has been installed with the wrong driver?
One of the peculiarities of the MacOSX print driver installation process is that it seems to default to offering the Airprint driver rather than the manufacturers driver - I suspect it lists them in alphabetical order. In the Add dialog to add a printer there is a pop-up menu towards the bottom which is labelled "Use". To use the correct driver you have to choose it from the menu - in the case of an HP 8610 it will be called something like "HP Officejet Pro 8610". If you don't have this driver selected then I doubt the scanner would work correctly.
I would suggest deleting the current driver installation for the printer by selecting it in the list in the Printers & Scanners pre pane and clicking on the - button, then click on the + button to re-install the printer making sure that you select the correct driver.
Regarding the suggestion from Sunshyn2005, AFAIK the setting for Scan to Computer refers to scans which are initiated from the front panel of the printer rather than from software on the computer, so I doubt this is actually likely to be the problem.

I tried that yesterday. I tried again today. But, I can find nothing to do it on. I can not find HP utility. I tried on image capture and it just said an error occured while communicating with scanner.
When I go on HP Scan, I click on scanner and there is a yellow triangle with a ! in the middle. HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One is currently unavailable. Please check if it is turned on and connected, or try again later. Is what it says. The scanner is on. It has no problem printing. I just can not scan. I just reinstalled everything for the printer. Nothing.

You know what is odd? Now it works. LOL So, I reinstalled it yesterday. It took a long time. I mean, probably over an hour. It's not my computer. I have the fastest version of the new Mac Pro. You know, the one that looks like a trash can? haha So, it finished installing, I tried it and it worked. I just sat here, looking at my monitor. haha
The help section here is great. Thank you to everyone!

??? "opening HP Utility, then going to Scan to Computer under Settings, then look for enable Scan to Computer."
I see no such option when I go to settings under HP Utility (OS X 10.10.3).
FWIW, I have tried your steps...3 times. Still no joy. And Easy Scan produces the same problem. (Using a photosmart c4680)

Hi @bobpark,
There is no full feature software and driver for the Photosmart c4680, thus you will not be able to initiate a scan from the printer to the computer. Because there is no software, there is nothing on the computer for the printer to communicate to. You can however still scan from the computer using the alternate scan methods.
Perhaps you will find the following HP document helpful: HP Multifunction Printers - Scanning in OS X v10.10 Yosemite without HP Software.
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Forums. Best of luck.

Thanks for replying, but what you say about still being able to "scan from the computer using the alternate scan methods" is not true. With those methods, I continue to get the error message that the scanner is not connected to the computer. Printing works fine, though. And yes, I do have the latest printer software (3.3.2). And I am using Yosemite 10.10.3. And I have follwed all steps you have suggested, except that I was never offered an opportunity to connect with a Bonjour capable printer.
I used to be able to scan, though it's been a while since I did that. Was it Yosemite that broke the connection...or something else? Or has the printer software package just not been sufficiently updated for the Photosmart c4600 series?
Again, thanks for replying. Do ou have any other ideas?

Hello @bobpark,
Have you tried to run ASU (Apple Software Update) to see if there is an HP Printers Update? Sometimes the update does not actually show in the list, so you can download and install directly from Apple. I have supplied the link below.
