Printer would crash on every boot. Here are some symptoms. These all occur randomly and inconsistent

  • Plug-in power, LCD doesn't light up. No activity. Other times, attempts to boot
  • Boot blue screens with various error codes
  • Boot to vertical bars
  • Boot up to menu screen briefly, then all lights blink and says printer error

AC adapter shows 30v steady. USB port shows 5v steady when plugged in no matter how the boot crashes. Given steady AC adapter and all the above random boot crash issues (including randomly no activity when plugging in) Thought its likely a capacitor that generates the processor/memory's power rails (typically 1v 1.5v 1.8v 3.3v etc) Took apart the printer and found 1 bulging capacitor (330uF 6.3v) on the main board. Changed it and now printer is fixed. Pardon the soldering job 🙂

Directions to take apart printer ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brZS_kHIxmE ) When reassemble the side cover over the main board, be very careful to not pinch 2 flex cable in the rear corner. Probably interface to the document feeder/scanner.
