The 169.254.x.x address is an address that is generated if the device cannot get an address from a DHCP server. This simply means that in your case, the printer tried to get the IP address but could not find a DHCP server to deliver one.

The reason might be that either there is (or there was) no DHCP server on the network or that the printer could not connect to the server.

Your problem seems to be different.

Another update:

It happened that I switched to the wired connection (with a fixed IP address) and (so far) the printer did not freeze, fall into the endless sleep or in any other way failed. So far so good. I am running like that for about a week.

You seem to be blaming the server, or the network.    All my other DHCP clients (5) don't seem to have a problem renewing their address.   Why can't it be some kind of a short timeout, or limited number of retries in the printer?  or both.

I did not realize you could cancel the sleep mode. So much for the Energy Star Rating, better remove that decal at the same time.

I downloaded the firmware update you recommended and so far it has corrected the problem. Many Thanks.

Same issue, latest firmware.  Is there a fix or just a design flaw?  every time I don't use the printer for more than a day I have to unplug the power cord to wake it up.

I don't think there is a fix. So far most people who experienced this problem (not everyone does) had to swithc to wired connection, disable the sleep mode or hard reboot every few days.

It does not seem that HP has anything to say about  it.

I have fought with this piece of crap for months.. I have a stong computer background with over 30 years experience and I may say this is the last pile of crap printer from HP I will ever spend a dime on. I Actually PLAN TO BEAT THIS PRINTER INTO PIECES WITH A BAT! Seriously..

Lets see..

Software wont load on WIndows 7 unless you use the stripped down corp version

Had to use a Windows XP PC to update the Firmware (No Win 7 support to Flash Good Job HP!!!)

AND FInally my fav prob.. Sleeps and not wakeup

Oh and I love when I print something and the printer decides to do all its head cleaning and adjusting and bullcrap for what feels like an eternity while I wait for ONE FRIGGIN PAGE.

Glad HP pays to run a website where people can trash their products..They obviously dont read the comments...

Charlie, I was having problems as well, and I also have over 30 years in computers, but one of the replies here suggested there was no DHCP server, and that got me to thinking.   I had a pretty large network in my home, that I had added things to over the years, multiple routers, switches, etc.    My non-wireless router connected to the cable modem  was the DHCP server, and I had two wireless routers connected to it, with a switch connected to one of the wireless routers.   Sometimes I would also have problems with laptops getting an IP address, and I would have to reset a wireless router or even the whole network to get things to work.

I finally decided to simplify my network, one wireless router ( also the DHCP server ) connected to the cable modem.   I still have a switch connected to it, but that was mostly for an old TIVO which I no longer use, but I keep the switch for added ports.   I disconnected the wired connection to the 6500, and it's been working fine ever since.

Guess I thought I knew too much and was just lucky any of it worked at all.

BTW, that firmware update? It doesn't show up if your OS is Windows 7. I had to use XP and use an old computer. Really, HP?
