HP Offficejet 7612
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

My Officejet 7612 printer is printing wrong colours. Printing the test page seems to give reasonable colours, which made me suspect the drivers.

This happened with my old iMac running MacOS 10.7, and I assumed drivers weren't available for a system that old.

Now I have a new computer running MacOS 10.13.3 and the problem persists. The drivers are up to date.

@Ally-Pally, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned that you are not using HP genuine ink to print.

It certainly looks to be an ink cartridge issue, After replacing the ink cartridges with HP genuine ink cartridges. You should have no issues.

Also, make sure to follow print quality troubleshooting from my previous thread if the issue persists.

Hi! @Ally-Pally, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand your printer is not printing in true colors.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried printing with a different ink cartridge?

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges to print?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Check the ink levels, and then replace any low or empty cartridges

Try printing a Print Quality Diagnostic report and check if the issue persists.

If the copy works fine, try the steps recommended below.

• Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.

• Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.

• Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.

• Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.

• Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.

• Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list

• Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.

• Click the “Add button” (+).

• Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

Click “Print Using...” or “Use”, and then select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint. Alternatively, you may select the name of your printer if available in that list.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Use an automated tool to clean the printhead

Follow these steps to clean the printhead.

   note:

To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead, always turn the printer off with the Power button on the printer itself.

1.From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow (), and then touch Setup ().

2.Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Printhead.

3.Wait while the printer cleans the printhead and then prints a test page.

   note:

You might have to clean the printhead several times to correct the issue.

4.Print another Print Quality Diagnostic Page to see if the issue is resolved.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot print quality issues with your printer.

I hadn't changed anything when the problem started. Colour is bad when copying, and when printing from all applications. I've changed ink cartridges, with no result. They aren't HP ink. I await delivery of some genuine HP cartridges.

I've re-installed the drivers as you recommend, with no change. (I can't find "Print Using..." or "Use" Where is that?)

I've cleaned the print heads several times. No change.

We'll see what happens with HP ink.

OK, the new genuine ink has arrived and has solved the problem.

This raises a question. Is the alternative ink printing wrong because other firms don't make it properly? In which case fair enough, use the right stuff.

Or when the printer detects a non-genuine cartridge does it alter its colour reproduction to prevent using other sources of ink? (Me paranoid? Look at Volkswagen.) Can someone assure me that this isn't the case.

Um, no. It's not an accepted solution because you've tried hard. It IS an accepted solution because it works, and I'll mark it as such.

BTW, this is a technical forum. Are badges and ranks really worthwhile? Making lots of posts could mean having lots of problems.

I'm grumpy this morning. Thanks for the help.

Hi @Ally-Pally,

I read the quick reply. I am glad that the issue is resolved. As @MrRobo is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf. Original genuine HP cartridges are designed and tested by HP for their products. That is why HP always recommends genuine HP ink cartridges. As far as other companies are concerned I would not be able to comment on that as I would not know how the cartridges work.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead.
