Hi @RockCityRick,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel the frustration that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8630, once a reliable companion for your iPhone and MacBook, now feels like it’s keeping you at arm’s length with that “locked by administrator” message. Let’s gently walk through the steps to bring it back into your workflow, like welcoming an old friend back home.

Why This Happens

When you change your internet provider, your printer may still be trying to connect to the old network. If admin settings were previously configured (even unknowingly), the printer might restrict changes until the admin password is reset.

Step-by-Step: Factory Reset to Remove Admin Lock

This will reset your printer’s settings, including the admin password, so you can reconnect it to your new Wi-Fi:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Press and hold the lower-left corner of the touchscreen.
  3. While holding that corner, press and hold the Cancel button.
  4. Plug the printer back in while still holding both.
  5. Keep holding until you see “Permanent Storage Init” on the screen.
  6. Release everything and wait for the printer to finish resetting.
  7. Once done, turn the printer back on and follow the setup prompts.

This will clear the admin lock and let you reconnect to your new Wi-Fi network.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi

Once reset, follow these steps to reconnect:

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen, tap:
    • SetupNetworkWireless Setup Wizard
  2. Select your new Wi-Fi network.
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
  4. Wait for the blue wireless light to turn solid.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

  • Thank you for the response and recommended solution.  When, I turn the power off and unplug my printer, I cannot locate the cancel  button on my hp 8630 officejet pro as there are no indicators available with the power off.  Please advise on location of the cancel button and how will I know if steps are successful.

Thank you.
