Officejet Pro 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The printer will not scan whether using the printer control panel, HP Scan & Capture or Third party program. All report scanner offline. Sometimes deleting and reinstalling printer allows scanning. However, by the next day, the scanner is again offline. The printer is always online and working.

Welcome to HP Support Community

I suggest you download and run the HP Print And Scan Doctor from this Link: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

Run PSDR v5.0.2

Once the PSDR detects the Printer, it will show up the IP address and Software Status.

Select the correct Printer and click on Next.

PSDR will check if the Printer is on the Network and communication between the PC and the Printer. Once the connection check is done, click on Fix Printing

Once PSDR goes through all checks and automatic fixes, click on Print a test page.

Regardless if PSDR printed the test page or not, click on “NO PRINT”

PSDR will then notify you that there is an update available, click on continue, and PSDR will apply the patch and ask for a reboot.

Post restart the PSDR will run automatically to check for more issue.  If no issue found close PSDR.

Then update the Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-6970-all-in-one-printer-series/828...

Try scanning and let me know how it goes 😊

I had a degree of success.

The PSDR did not notify me of an available update, though I tried the process several times.

After my tries, I was able to scan using "HPScan" ONCE. After that, I had to use "Not Another PDF Scan 2". However, scanning with the third party scanner program was very SLOW. I've never had it work that slowly before.

I plan to work on it some more as soon as I can make the time available; the last few days have been busy.

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I had been about ready to give up on HP Officejet Pro 6978's scanning ability.
