Your last response has lost me. It looks like you said that assigning a manual IP address doesn't change the IP address of the printer. My printer's current IP address is 192.168.1.130. That is within the automatic IP address range of my router, and that is at least part of my problem, becuae from time to time, the IP address of the printer will get changed (by the router or the printer or something , but not me). This messes things up, which is why I thought your suggestion to assign a manual IP address made sense (it won't get changed later, right?). But when I looked at the Assign manual IP page and asked it to suggest a manual IP address, it chose 192.168.1.239, which is outside the range of IP addresses managed by my router. That range is 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.149. But if I were to follow that recommendation, the IP address of my printer would most definitely change from 192.168.1.130 to 192.168.1.239. So I still don't understand your last update saying that the IP address of my computer won't change.
So unless you and I are talking about 2 different things, it would seem to me that assigning the manual IP address of 192.168.1.239 would mean that going to the old url of 192.168.1.130 would no longer take me to the EWS page of my printer. Can you see why your last statement confused me?

I didn't mean to confuse you 😉 that said, you can assign manual IP address as 192.168.1.130 (as your current one).
Manual Subnet Mask will be 255.255.255.0
This will make your printer have the same IP address as earlier. Therefore, you could be able to get to EWS page using the same IP address that you're using right now 🙂

Bud, now that you cleared up my confusion, I finally proceeded and made the IP address manual. Just on a hunch, I also chose 192.168.1.240 since that is in the range for some other devices (Directv DVR's) that I was advised to assign manual IP addresses for. The transition worked and the url in my browser was automatically changed to use the Host address for the printer instead of the IP address. I did this at least a week ago and (knock on wood) no more issues. Thanks

I don't know what any of the assigning and reassigning information above means but know nothing in my home other than this **bleep** printer loses it's connection regularly. Please tell me how to make this stop!

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Setting a Manual IP address would help:
Obtain the IP address of the Printer: If the device has a two-line display: PressSetup, select Network Setup, select Print Network Settings, and then press OK. • If the device has a color display: Press the Setup button, select Network, select View Network Settings, select Print Network Configuration Page, and then press OK.
Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
