Hi Guys,
I recently replaced all the ink cartridges in our officejet pro 8720. All cartridges are showing as full but when I try to print the black ink will not work. I have tried doing all the maintenance steps guided by the printer but nothing has worked so far.
Any ideas on how to fix it - replacing the ink as rather expensive so I'd like to save the printer if possible
TIA

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!
- Have you tried cleaning the print head?
- Do you face the same issue while making a copy?
Let's try these steps:
Step 1: Power Reset
- Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
- Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
- If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
- Try to print.
- If the issue persists, proceed to the next step
Step 2: Clean the print head(ignore this step if already performed)
-
On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon
.
-
Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
-
Touch Clean Printhead, and then touch Continue.
A test page prints.
-
Check the print quality. If the quality is unacceptable, proceed to the 2nd level of cleaning.
-
Perform up to 3 levels of cleaning if the issue persists.
-
Step 3: Update the printer firmware
- Refer to this link to update the printer firmware.
