HP Envy 5532, No. A9J48B
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So, after 2 years of trouble-free use I get 'Incompatible cartridge' message come up. Black cartridge is very low on ink so put new, genuine, HP cartridge in. No change. Go through online help, check software up to date and clean both cartridge and printer cartridge contacts, as per instructions. Try to download Print & Scan Doctor but fails, saying 64 bit system not supported. Help!! I'm fed up with buying new printers every few years, as they don't seem to be durable! I thought this HP product was the solution. No help from manufacturer without paying and online help doesn't cover this issue. Anyone else had this or knows how to fix it, please?

 @vale46,

Thank you for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • For which ink cartridge are you getting the error?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Check the cartridge compatibility

Please check if you are using the correct cartridges for your printer. Below is the list of compatible cartridges for the printer.

Step 2: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
  • Check if you can print/copy
  • If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Identify the Problem cartridge

You can use the printer in a single cartridge mode i.e with just 1 ink cartridge at a time.

  • Install any 1 of the ink cartridge in the printer
  • Close the cartridge door and check for error
  • Try to print/copy
  • Remove the ink cartridge and install the other cartridge and check for error
  • Try to print/copy

Let me know what happens.

Atharva_gp, thanks for your help. However, the only thing that worked was to use 1 cartridge mode with just the colour one. If the black cartridge is fitted it just shows the 'Incompatible cartridge' message again. The power off, wait 60 secs, etc. doesn't do anything. Unfortunately, once the error message is up, I can't get to any of the printer menus and so can't do a cartridge clean process etc. So I'm still stuck on getting back to 'normal' printing. The black cartridge I had resulted in the error message and likewise with the new one we bought. They are definately correct HP301 products and I've done the careful head clean as described on the HP website. Any suggestions how I can get out of this very annoying mess?

@vale46,

Since you have tried with 2 ink cartridges and still having the same issue, I think this could be an issue with the printer hardware.

I would request you to contact our HP Support Team for Service/Replacement/Upgrade options.
