HP PHOTOSMART 3110

My printer started making a very loud machine gun type of noise after turning on when carriage moves to right side and vibrates very loudly making 7-8 loud pops. Horrible sounding and very loud! I have removed and replaced the cartridges and made sure no paper was stuck. Have unplugged unit and plugged back in. It is printing ok but need to solve this ASAP.

Thank you.

Hi @PJ_R

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

I understand that the printer is making lots of noise when the carriage moves and you have already replaced the cartridges

I'd like to help.

I suggest you start with a Printer Reset.

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Then make sure that the Carriage is able to move freely

Step one: Check the carriage path

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cartridge access door.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

      caution:

You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.

Figure : Disconnect the power cord

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

Note: You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.

  6. Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.

caution:Do not mistake a locked carriage for a carriage that is stuck. Check to see if the carriage is docked and locked into place at the right end of its path.

Do not try to move the carriage from the docked and locked position.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.

    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.

  7. Remove all traces of paper or obstructions found.

  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.

  9. Close the cartridge access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet.

  12. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Thank you for your reply email. The carriage makes loud popping when it turns on and moves to right. It vibrates making the noise about 8 times all the way to the right. But the carriage is not stuck. I have unplugged the unit when on and off. There is no paper jammed however a piece of paper was caught previously and removed. What other manuevers are available to resolve this horrible noise. What are all the causes of this loud noise as I'm sure I am not the first? Please help.

The loud cartidge noise has stopped. I was able to print a test page. But if I try to print, it will state the right cartridge is stuck or obsructed. Nothing there. Will get red and green lights flashing. I have plugged and unplugged over and again. Installed new cartridge. What is the fix when cartridge thinks it is stuck?

It is not under warrantly and I usually need forum assistance as I cannot pay for out of warranty help. I need to print so this is a horrible inconvenience. Please assist, thank you.
