On my new HP 8610 All-in-one printer, I use only A4 paper. However, whenever I try to print, be it single-sided or duplex I get an error message saying "Paper too long to Auto-duplex".  If I close the window, the printer prints normally, so it is not a big problem, but I would like to be quit it anyway.

Hello @mussep,

Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue.

Because this error seems to appear when printing from multiple programs on your computer to your HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer there may be an issue within your printers Firmware Programming Version. Or, there may be a conflict occuring between your Windows 7 computer and your HP Officejet print driver. Can I please have you follow the steps below to isolate this issue and resolve this issue.

Step 1: Perform a Copy:

To ensure that the printers hardware is functioning properly, I am going to have you perform a Copy on the A4 paper from the front panel of your printer. If the Copy prints successfully, with no error messages on the printer or paper feed issues, then we will know that something on the computer is causing this print error.

How to Copy on A4 Paper:

  1. Please load a piece of paper to perform the Copy test on either the flatbed glass on your printer, or in the automatic document feeder on the top of your printer
  2. On the front screen of your printer please touch Copy
  3. Next, touch the Settings icon on the bottom of the screen
  4. Under Copy Settings touch Paper Size. Please make sure this is set to A4
  5. Choose Set as New Defaults. Hit Yes if prompted
  6. Please perform a Black or Colour Copy

- Source: How to Copy

  • If this Copy prints successfully with no paper feed issues or errors, than the printer hardware is functioning properly. This would indicate that the issue that you're experiencing is being caused by something on the computer. Can I please have you proceed to the next step to resolve this issue.

  • If this Copy fails to print successfully, than the issue that you're experiencing is being caused by your printer. This may be an issue within the internal Firmware Programming within your printer. Essentially, the Firmware is the 'brains' of your printer and controls what the printer does and how the printer does it. If there is a corruption within the internal Firmware Programming in your printer it may cause printer performance issues. Can I please have you click here  to download the latest Firmware Update. Once the download is complete you may see a prompt to 'run' the Firmware Update. Please allow this to run. The Firmware Update Tool will now launch. Follow the onscreen prompts to 'send' the Firmware Update to your printer. Once the update has completed successfully please perform another test Copy to confirm if your machine now Copies successfully on A4 paper. If the Copy is now successful, please print from your computer to verify if the issue is now resolved. If Copying still fails, please do not proceed with troubleshooting at this time.

Step 2: Uninstall Driver:

If you use a USB Cable connection between your computer and your HP Officejet, please disconnect that cable now.

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. Select All Programs
  3. Select the HP folder
  4. Select the HP Officejet
  5. Select Uninstall

Please follow any onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall. Once the uninstall is complete please proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Clear Temp Files:

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. In the 'search programs and files' box located right above Start after you click on it, type %temp% and hit enter on your keyboard
  3. When the Temp folder opens, select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard. Everything in this folder will now highlight.
  4. Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. The Temp folder contains temporary internet files. No actual files or folders on your computer will be affected by deleting the Temp files. Should a Temp file still be used than you will automatically get the pop up to 'skip' that item.
  5. Close the Temp folder once it is emptied
  6. Right click the Recycling Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycling Bin. Please proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Install Device:

  1. Please click here to download the latest drivers for your HP Officejet.
  2. Once the download is complete please follow the onscreen prompts to install your printer
  3. If using a USB Cable connection, do not plug in the USB Cable until the installer prompts you to

Once the installation is complete please test printing from your computer to confirm if the 'Paper too long to Auto-Duplex' error is resolved.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Best of luck! 🙂

Hello @mussep,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that when printing on A4 size documents from your computer to your HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer you are getting the message 'Paper too long to Auto-Duplex'. I would like to assist you today with resolving this error message. However, before I am able to accurately guide you to a solution for this error I do need to clarify a few things.

  • (2) Does this 'Paper too long to Auto-Duplex' message pop up under all programs that you print from, or just one specific program?

If this error occurs under one specific program, what program is it?

According to the paper handling specifications for your HP Officejet All-in-One the following media is supported:

  • The duplexer supports:

Untitled.png

  • A4 paper is supported in the following trays:

Therefore, the A4 size of paper that you're using is fully supported with your printer and duplex assembly.

Once I find out exactly what Operating System you're using and what program is reporting the duplex error I will be more than happy to guide you to a solution. I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

My OS is Win 7 64-bit.

As far as I am able to recollect, the error msg turns up whenever I try to print, from MS Word or any window I reach through a link. Sorry if that seems a bit vague, but I do not print a great deal, and, as I am 83+, my memory is not what it should be. I am able to print the document on another printer (Canon Pixma iP4200) without any complications of this sort.

At the moment, I have only one paper tray.

I have tried everything, short of throwing the Pro 8630 printer out.  I followed your guidelines and nothing fixed my problem.  My printer worked fine on April 16th for 2 sided printing.  Now I keep getting the Paper too long to auto-duplex on everything except the copying step you had in your instructions.

I have uninstalled, restarted reinstalled, updated firmware from HP downloads.  cleared out my temp file as in instructions and still the thing does not work.

I tried printing from my husband's computer and it does the same thing so it has to be something with the printer.

I have a new printer waiting to be installed on my husband's computer but until I resolve this HP printer problem, I am not sure I want anotehr HP printer.

FYI on my printer issues.  After all failed and I was ready to kick the printer to the curb, I decided to try one last thing..

I reset my cable modem and my printer started to print properly.  Don't know if this is any help for future use but just thought I would let you know.
