HP Officejet 8710 All-In-One Printer
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

I recently purchased a HP Officejet 8710 all-in-one printer.  My MacBook Air cannot find/recognize the printer on my wireless network.  However, my husband has a Lenovo (Windows) laptop, so we tried that and it recognized and connected to the printer immediately.   So, to connect the MacBook to the printer, i had to input the IP address of the printer, which did work.  The problem is that the print quality when using the Mac is terrible - colors are wrong shades, grainy/blurry images and text, etc.   If I print the same document from the Windows laptop, the print quality is great and the colors are crisp and accurate.  The Windows laptop gives several options for print quality (draft, normal, best) along with other printing options.  The MacBook does not give any choice to select any default settings for better print quality.   Why is the print quality so poor when printing from the Mac?   Is there a driver issue?   Thank you!

Thank you for joining the HP Support Community

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Is the copy working fine?

Are you using genuine HP Ink cartridge?

If you are facing the same issue while making a copy, follow the steps in the below link for the print quality issue.

Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/7902014/documen...

If the copy is working fine, follow the below steps.

Update the printer firmware and Mac software using the below links:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

Restart the printer and the MAC

Then, follow the below steps to remove the printer and add the printer as AirPrint.

Step 1: Remove multiple printers from the printer list

Check for multiple devices in the Printers list, and then remove any extra entries other than one in idle status.

  1. Search the Mac for Print, and then click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners in the list of results.

  2. Find the printer names that match your printer from the list of devices.

Figure : Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of a printer in the list

  3. If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list. Leave one 'idle' printer in the list that matches your printer if available and use this printer as the Default printer.

  4. Try printing again.

    • If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the printer remains offline or displays an error, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer

Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.

  2. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button  to delete it.

  3. Click the Add button .

  4. Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

  5. Click Print Using or Use.

  6. Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.

Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status .

  7. Try printing again.
