I've got an old but pretty good Officejet 4500 G510g. I got an error message when trying to print, which says:
"Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem 0x8007007e".
I thought the problem was with the printer so, as I've got lots of spare ink, I decided to buy another printer of the same model, second hand obviously. I removed all of the existing software before installing the replacement printer - but lo and behold I got the same error message with the new printer.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next and wonder if anyone can help!

Hi Betty,
I've managed to resolve the problem and thought you might like to know.
I noticed that there have been a number of people with the same problem recently, and with various HP printers. I thought it might be a Windows issue and found one post that suggested that. So I removed the most recent Windowes Updates (dated 10 April or later), although to do this I had to stop them automatically updating again, by changing to Metered Connection on my WiFi. By the time I'd finished I tried to print again - and hey presto the printer was working fine again!
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which helps in resolving common printing and scanning problems such as missing or corrupt print drivers, connectivity issues etc.
Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93
If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Also, try updating the printer firmware and check if it helps.

Hi Betty,
Thanks for your message.
I found a few similar suggested fixes yesterday after I posted my message. I've tried each of them (more than once!) and I still keep getting the same error message. The only thing I've not been able to do is a firmware update butwhen I click on your link there's no firmware section for my printer, with a message saying that no update is currently available.
So, all in all I am very frustrated as I can't seem to solve the problem! The printer works fine when I print a test page.
This only started last month. I can see that a number of people have raised the same problem, with different HP printers, so wonder whether it's a wider problem due to an HP oir Windows update? My operating systyem is Windows 10 Home.

Try using the HP Smart App for printing: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04675142

Hi Betty,
I did yes.
I've tried a few times again. The last time I tried to print from the app, but I get the same error message.
I'm wondering if there has been a software update, by HP or Windows, that has caused this conflict?

Hi again,
I've tried this one previously and again just now - same result sadly, still getting the error message.
I don't know if it's relevant, but when the printer installed I noticed that HP Smart had been added to my installed apps - not sure if it was meant to do this.

Let's try creating a new user account and then try installing the drivers there and printing: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-acc...
