Officejet pro 8600. 

Just did a head clean routine and it stopped on stage 2 with a printer failure error - no number. Said to turn off/on, still same. Printer was ok prior to head clean.

Well I don't know from your description if it's the same thing that happened to me. same error message.  But I can tell you that when my 8600 came up with that error, it was just out of the blue.  Then I was locked out of the user interface, and it never let me do anything else. 

 

The bad news is that my printer was dead.  I had to throw it away and buy a new one (which is NOT an HP, because this is two of those HP multifunction printers that died prematurely).
