HP DeskJet 3720 All-in-One Printer

I have an hp deskjet 3720 printer and it’s saying the printer door is open when it’s not so I can’t print. I’ve tried all the troubleshooting I found online and nothing worked but someone with a different hp printer said in a forum that they had the same issue and toggled the sensor and it fixed the issue, but I have no idea where the door sensor is on the 3720.
I have seen that you can purchase replacement sensors but I need to know where it is in my printer.
it works great otherwise and this is my first time having any issues so I’d like to try every solution.

Hi @Dallyd ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "printer door open" error on the HP DeskJet 3720 often stems from a misaligned or faulty door sensor. This sensor detects whether the access door is closed, and if it’s not working correctly, the printer might mistakenly think the door is open.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to locate and troubleshoot this:

  • Locate the Printer Door Sensor: The door sensor on the HP DeskJet 3720 is typically near the ink cartridge access door. It might be a small lever or a tiny, spring-loaded mechanism inside the printer. Open the cartridge access door and look for a plastic lever or a small tab along the edge, either near the hinges or along the sides.
  • Check for Dust or Debris: Sometimes, the sensor can get obstructed. Use a can of compressed air to gently clear any dust or debris that may be affecting the sensor.
  • Toggle the Sensor: If you can see the lever or tab, gently press and release it a few times. This can sometimes reset a misaligned sensor.
  • Test the Printer: Close the door and turn the printer back on to see if the error persists.

If the sensor is broken and you’re comfortable with repairs, you can order a replacement and install it by referring to an HP repair manual or guide for your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
