Inkjet 1512
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

The printer will scan and print but will print nothing from the computer; documents, pdfs off the web or pictures. I've done the diagnostics provided with the software and it tells me some issues have been fixed but it will not print the test page. It is set as the default printer. It has worked perfectly well for at least a year before that.

I have uploaded the latest Windows driver and removed the HP software and it won't print on that and won't when I reload the HP software from the HP Website. The ink supplies should be fine as the printer is not heavily used and the estimate shows at least 1/3rd black and at least 2/3rds colour. I have new cartridges but haven't tried them as it will print a scan.

Many thanks in advance. I suspect it will be something blindingly obvious except to me.

Hi @BrianT47,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As I understand you are having difficulty uninstalling the printer drivers, don't worry as I have a few steps which should help you resolve this issue.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

· Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP DeskJet printer entries and uninstall them.

· Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

· Restart your computer.

· Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

· Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

· Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

· Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

· Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.

· Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

· Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

· Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.

· Now restart your computer again.

· Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

· Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

· Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

· Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

· Click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL48430/al-117537-4/DJ1510_188.exe and install the software.

· Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

If you are still facing the issues to remove the driver, then try using a 3rd party software removal applications like "Revo uninstaller" or "Wise" to completely remove the programs.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that’s awesome!

Thanks for coming back but sadly it still won't work.

My last printing was a few weeks ago.

Apart from removing and re-uploading the software, I did nothing else before contacting you

I must report that the software link was not correct; it led to another printer and was rejected by the uploader. I have installed the Series 1510 one and the printer is showing correctly when a print is requested and is registered in the drivers. It just doesn't get through to the printer. I have tried another lead.

I did remove the Windows driver when going through the printer drivers installed that  you mentioned. The HP driver was not shown.

I have just put the HP software on my Elite Book which I have as a spare/for trips if needed and that works fine so I have a work around at least.

Thank you for your response.

I cannot see any firmware updates on the HP Site for the 1512 printer. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place. The printer works perfectly well with my spare, reconditioned EliteBook including printing AbiWord documents so whatever is wrong seems to be something not right in my desktop. I did update the Windows driver for the printer and tried printing with that without the HP driver but it worked perfectly well before when the old version and the HP driver were both there. I haven't tried with the updated Windows and HP drivers both installed.

Do you have any other thoughts?

Thanks for the reply,

I appreciate your time and effort.

Install the printer with the Windows Built-in Print Driver to fix this issue.

Click here and follow the steps mentioned in the document to install the printer.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

Thanks for the further information.

I had tried running it on the latest Windows driver alone about two replies ago and that didn't seem to work. I wasn't able to complete the steps you have just outlined for reasons not entirely clear to me. As I have a work around with my Elite Book and I don't do much printing anyway, it is a minor inconvenience but it would be good to get to the bottom of it nevertheless as it used to work perfectly well. I mention that I used the same USB port to print off the EliteBook and I have tried the lead I used for the EliteBook on the desktop.

If you can think of anything further I will give it a try.

Hi @BrianT47,

Thank you for replying,

As I understand you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue, don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

First thing, you could do here is to do a clean installation and if this does not help, I would suggest you try to create a new user account and check if that helps.

If nothing helps, I would personally suggest you contact our HP phone support so that they can remotely take control of your PC and help you check the settings.

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer & PC.
  • Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
  • Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”
  • Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer”  – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device"
  • Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”
  • Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from internet.
  • Now restart your computer and reinstall the printer software.

Let me know how that goes. Good luck!

If the issue persists, please try creating a New User account and then check if that helps.

If nothing works, please contact our HP phone support for available service related options.

Thank you for this further help.

I couldn't see anything in the folders you mentioned that matched what you said I should delete. I do have a 'freebie' system speed up tool from Avira which I run from time to time. I can't recall if I started using it before or after the problem appeared and I have no idea whether it might have deleted something it shouldn't have or not deleted something it would have if it had been the paid version.

One thing I have noticed is that when trying to print with the printer disconnected, I just get the spinning disc which does not go away. If I connect, turn on the printer and try again, the spinning stops after a few seconds. In neither case is there any error message which you might expect to get.

I don't know if this sheds any light on the problem but I will look into the other options you mention at the end of your post if you have no further ideas.
