I have a D1500 and and F4180. Both old, like me, great printers but they won't print a full A4 sheet.
If I set up a doc or pic to fill a full A4 there is something like a 20mm blank space at the bottom of the sheet and that 20mm of text or image just disappears. As if the printer thinks it's printed it??

Hi,
Both of the printers do not support borderless printing on A4 paper.
For the HP Deskjet D1500, borderless printing is only supported on 4 x 6 inch photo paper with a tab (0.5 inch), see page 15 of its user guide:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01373907
Also for the F4180 borderless printing is only supported on a 4 x 6 photo paper as listed in its specs below:
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press_kits/2008/macworld/fs_deskjetf4180aio.pdf
The minimum bottom margins would be 12.7mm for both the D1500 and F4180 models (see the Print margin section).

Ah. Thanks a lot. Now I understand to a certain degree. Don't quite understand why there is that 12.7mm gap but I'll take that into consideration for future reference. Might have helped if I'd ever actually read the instructions? ;D
