Received the dreaded "Printhead appears to be missing" message during initial setup of brand new Officejet Pro 8740. I am familiar with this as it was the beginning of the end for my ten year old Officejet Pro K8600 a few months ago...but with a brand new printer?
I've taken out the ink cartridges and put them back in, turned the printer on and off, plugged directly into the wall.
Very frustrated after two hours of being disconnected from support telephone calls and the online support not recognizing my serial number or product number.
Tried to signup for a business support account, but it won't recognize my just created username or password.
Will follow the printhead troubleshooting steps if I must, but this never helped in the past. And I am dubious that it is necessary with a never-used printer.
Perhaps the best route is to get a replacement? I don't want a long road ahead with a lemon printer that I depend upon for my business.

Verify that the printhead latch is closed correctly.
