Suddenly this afternoon, my printer is not printing. Error message is Printing - Can't open "/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/..." I've tried several times - Word document, Mail message, same results (except numbers after tmp/ change each time). I've rebooted the Mac and shut down and restarted the printer. Same results.
Deleted the printer from the printer list and re-added it again. Same results.

Good news. It is printing again. Thanks for all your help.

Try to Reset the Print System then set up the printer again.

Odd that was working when I sent it. Now down. 😕
Try Apple's support site instead.

Sorry. Did you do the Reset or did you just delete all the printers?
The Reset will fix any permissions issues with the folders which is what it sounds like you are running into,

I did the Reset Printing System. I had deleted the problem printer earlier.
Curious - why would I have a permissions issue with one printer and not the other.
And another curious question (just in case - and you may not know the answer - that will be okay). I understand the 8710 is no longer manufactured. Do you know what the current replacement is - has the same features and uses the same ink jet cartridges?

You are correct. You would think a permissions issue would affect multiple printers. I just wanted to try the easy stuff first.
There are some odd things going on with certificates expiring on older software today. Perhaps this is yet another symptom of that. 😞
Try the following:
Please update your software using HP Easy Start.
1. Download HP Easy Start
2. Follow the prompts for setting up your printer. When you get to the software download it will show whether the software needs updated or not. If it does the box next to Printer Essentials will be checked by default and you just need to select the Install button.
The following should not be necessary but if you want to be extra diligent and guarantee a clean new install.
1. Download HP Easy Start
2. Open HP Easy Start and Select the HP Easy Start Menu in the macOS menu bar. In this menu select Uninstall HP Software.
3.Select Continue to start the Uninstall process
4. Once the uninstall completes. Select Set Up New Device.
5. Go through the new device setup process by following the prompts.
6. This will lead to the software download/install prompt.
7. Select install and the remaining prompts to finish the process.
The follow on product to the 8710 would be the OfficeJet Pro 8015 or 9015/9025. Unfortunately they do not use the same cartridges.

Any progress? Several more users are experiencing the same issue now which leads me to believe it is due to the security update Apple pushed today. In many cases updating software has resolved various issues. I just do not have any confirmation it fixes this particular one. So any feedback is very appreciated.
