HP Envy 4500 All-in-one
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

The procedure for printing a web-page has suddenly changed.

Up to today, it was simple. I clicked on the print icon on the Favourites Bar. This launched the print dialogue box. I then clicked 'Preferences' to select the print quality and finally 'print'.

Today I wanted to print confrmation of an on-line order. When I clicked on  anything in the Print dialogue box, another window opened.

I managed to  select my printer, but when I clicked 'print' nothing happened. Also, I couldn't change any settings beyond the number of copies and whether to print on one or both sides. What's going on?

Hi @hbf1842,

What is the new name of the printer now listed as the default printer in Devices and Printers? (Envy 4500 or Envy 4500 Class)

If the Class driver is installed, that would be a Windows preinstalled driver and it wouldn't have the automatic option to duplex. You would have to remove it and add in the Envy 4500.

If you are still having issues, uninstall and reinstall the printer software again.

The HPePrint driver is automatically installed with Windows 8. Just make sure that it isn't selected as the default printer in the future.

Thanks!

Greetings @hbf1842,

I hope you will enjoy your experience on the HP Support Forums! I see by your post that you aren't able to print from the internet. I would like to help.

Try another browser to see if you have the same results. Try touching Ctrl + P to see if you have the options.

What browser are you using?

Check Devices and Printer to see what printer is set as the default printer. Let me know how it was listed.

If you appreciate the help, click the "Accept as Solution" and the "Thumbs Up". Please keep me posted. Regards,

I have now worked out how to print a web-page, but this doesn't resolve the other problem:.

I can't change the print quality, so the printer always prints in best quality, which uses more ink.

Also, I can't see that, if I want to print double sided, I can select whether to flip on the long edge or the short. Would this be automatic, if I were printing a file in which the paper orientation was landscape rather than portrait.

I can't work out how to find 'Devices & Printers', but my default printer is, I think, now called 'HP e-Print'.  Up until yesterday, it was called by its model name — 'HP Envy 4500'.

Hi @hbf1842,

The "HP e-Print' would be the issue.

Please go to the Startup screen, (tiles menu) type in Devices and Printers, select Settings, click on Devices and Printers.

Right click on the Envy 4500 printer and left click on Set as default.

Then try printing again.

Thanks!

That has worked, although things aren't quite as they were before.

There wasn't an icon for the HP Envy 4500 series in Printers and Devices,  so I've had to add it, which I've done and selected it as the default.

Now when I print the dialogue box isn't the same. In particular, the printer no longer automatically flips the paper if I want to print double sided, which it did before, so I have to do it manually. It would be nice to get this back.

Why and how was the original printer suddenly removed and repalce with HP e-Print?

Should I remove HP e-Print?

At least if this problem recurs, I now know where to find Devices and Printers and how to reset the Defaul Printer.

The new name of the printer is Envy 4500 Series Class Driver. I have actually managed to add the option for duplex printing, but I'd prefer to reinstall the correct driver for my actual model of printer. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

If not, I'll be back.

I'm back.

I haven't yet used the link you gave me to the correct driver to the printer, because a new dreiver suddently reappeared in 'Printers', which I recognised as the one that was previously there but had inexplicably disappeared and been replace with HP e-Print. This one is called HP Envy 4500 Series (Network).

However, there are now two problems, which I experienced about twelve months ago, but which were put right by an HP technician, to whom I was able to talk by telephone.

The first problem is that, if the laptop is switched off or goes into sleep mode, when I next try to print, the printer's status is off-line even if it hasn'y neen turned off. I then have to switch it off and turn it back on again before I can print.

The second problem is that if I'm printing a file of several pages, the printer suddenly loses contact with the laptop after a few pages and the print job is cancelled. this is particularly irritating if I'm printing either double sided or odd/even page only.

I can't remember now how both issues were solved, but I think it was something the technician himself was able to do on-line. There doesn't seem to be a help-line number to ring now. What do you advise me to do?
