So, we have this problem that occurs randomly.  Printing from various programs, the printer will want to print to print to Tray 1, which is the manual feed on the side.  That tray is NEVER selected.  This will occur when, in the print dialogue, in the Page Source setting,  "Automatically Select" or "Printer Auto Select" or "Use Printer Setting" is selected.  The printer will hold up and request that paper be added to Tray 1.  You then have to go to the printer, cancel the print, and start the whole print process again, and the only work-around is to manually select Tray 2 in the Page Source setting.

I thought the Tray Lock funtion was supposed to keep prints from going to a certain paper tray but this function does not work at all.

Hi,

If you are printing on Letter.

Go to the driver and set that to Letter. It problably is set on A4

Also, make sure the paper selected on the application match with the selections on the printer, Paper Size, Paper Type.

I hope this helps.

Mikeg81 - that setting was already set to Letter size in my system. Same result of printer trying to use Tray 1.

What paper type is selected on the printer and what paper is selected on the software.

Plain paper type, Letter size on both.  All the settings I have set on the printer itself are to go to tray 2.

Hi,

Is the driver installed locally on the client computer or a server?

If it is on a server, install it locally and try printing that way.

If you could, share screenshots of all the taps on the driver, the print window of your application and the paper and try configuration on the embedded web server.

Thought I'am the only guy who has this problem, cause 80% of all x476 in my company are having exactly the same weird problem. Tray1 is locked over the web-interface (printer is successfully ignoring this), the drivers are configured for "autoselect tray" and papersize "A4". Doesn't matter if you are sending an eMail, a PDF or a MS-Word document, sometimes it happens that the printer wants letter-format in Tray1.

I'm troubleshooting this problem for over 4 months. In my case, the combination of the new firmware (Date: 15.September 2014) and the most recent "HP Universal Printer Driver" seems to be a solution. Not guaranteed, but this problem has not occured in the two weeks which have passed since the upgrade from driver and firmware in my company at least.

Is the program that causes this generally MS Office (usually Excel)?

See my post re paper tray selection from excel which describes a problem I have been looking for a solution to for several years.   I have an Officejet Pro X476DW with the optional paper tray 3 and find Excel randomly  locks onto tray 2 when I want tray 3 and uses print settings that must be stored somewhere.  The printer is networked and replaced a Dell laserjet also with an extra paper tray.  The Dell displayed exactly the same behaviour which makes me think this is either a network problem or an MS Office issue.

Most of the time is a selection issue on the SW.

Try callign HP support for this as it could also be a firmware or driver issue.
