I have been running my Deskjet 1010 for several months; WinXP, all the updates.
For some reason, after I replaced the ink recently, I have had a lot of trouble printing; PDFs have been incredibly slow, sometimes printing several pages before suddenly deciding to just start spitting out a blank page, and occasionally printing half a page before spitting out the rest.
Trying to cancel print jobs in progress was often impossible, requiring a reboot.
I uninstalled the software, reinstalled the basic driver, and managed to get a few more pages done before getting blank pages again.
Any ideas?

Hey @WombatBob,

Thanks for getting back to me regarding this printing issue.

I do not think it is an issue with your Print Spooler. If it was, no programs would be able to print to your product. As you stated, you're able to print with Word and you're just having an issue with PDFs.

Are you printing PDFs through Adobe?

If so, you may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling your Adobe Reader program.

Adobe Reader

Should this not resolve your issue I do think you may have a driver conflict. To resolve this you can load an alternative driver on your printer to see if this prints all file types properly.

How To Add An Alternate Driver:

  1. Click on your Start menu and select Printers and Faxes
  2. In the Printers and Faxes folder right click on your HP Deskjet 1010 and left click on Properties
  3. Left click on the Advanced tab
  4. Left click on New Driver
  5. When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
  6. Select HP as the Manufacturer on the left
  7. Select Deskjet 990c as the printer on the right. If Deskjet 990c doesn't appear than select 'Windows Update' on the bottom left and once the update completes you will be able to select Deskjet 990c.
  8. After selecting Deskjet 990c hit next to complete the New Driver Wizard
  9. Under the Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
  10. Select the General tab
  11. Rename your printer back to HP Deskjet 1010
  12. Hit OK

Once the driver is added in, try to print a PDF file and see how that goes.

I look forward to hearing from you. Fingers crossed! 🙂

Hello @WombatBob,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I would like to assist you today with resolving the printing issues you're experiencing on your HP Deskjet 1010 Printer from your Windows XP Computer since replacing your ink. There is two possibilities that could be causing the issues you're experiencing: (1) Hardware issues (2) Driver and Software conflicts. I'm going to start by having you run some standard print quality troubleshooting steps to see if this issue happens standalone. From there, we may need to troubleshooting the printer software and drivers on your computer.

Step 1: Print a Diagnostics Page:

First, I will have you print a standalone Print Diagnostics Page. I want to see if the print quality is perfect and if the response time of your printer is normal.

1. Make sure there is plain white, letter-size paper loaded in the input tray

2. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer (). The printer software opens.

3. In the printer software, click Print.

4. Click Maintain Your Printer (). The HP Toolbox opens.

5. Click the Device Reports tab.

6. Click the Print Diagnostic Information icon. The test page prints.

Does the Print Diagnostic Page print with colour and black on it?

If no, than you're experiencing a hardware issue. If this is the case, can I please have you run through the following support document:

Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Deskjet Ink Advantage an...

If yes, than you may be experiencing a Software and Driver conflict on your computer. To resolve this, can I have you run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool? This Tool will 'fix printing' issues for you. It will run a scan on your computer and should any software, driver, or connection conflicts be found the HP Print and Scan Doctor will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.

HP Print and Scan Doctor

Please let me know what the result of printing the Print Diagnostics Report is. Best of luck! Smiley Happy

No problem with the test page (although I never use colour).
It prints with Word; just has trouble with pdfs; after a reboot, I can usually get it to print maybe 5 or 6 pages of pdfs before it starts simply spitting out paper.
Was wondering if there is something wrong with the spooler, because at one point, even after trying to cancel a print operation several times, the print request was still showing up, and I couldn't empty the files in the spoler folder.
Was also thinking maybe something to do with the tiffs used to create the pdfs, because they sometimes cause troubles with other software (I originally tried to print them directly from MS "document imaging" as part of the OCR process), but that doesn't explain why there should be problems with pdf (although I might try converting the tiffs to jpegs later and see what happens).
Also not a resolution issue, since the documents were scanned and are being printed at 300 dpi, and not a memory issue (unless the printer's memory cache is really really small???).

I was using Foxit partly because I've had so much trouble with Adobe in general; also tried it with Acrobat, and had the same problem.

But yes: that worked; many thanx, muchos gracias, merci bien, etc.

This issues wa happen to me today when printing a pdf document through adobe reader.

Solved by changing driver to "HP Deskjet 1010 Series Class Driver" instead of "HP Deskjet 1010 Series"

and now it is printing quickly as before.
