My printer was running low on yellow ink, but still printing fine, until at one point it stopped printing. It still had some cyan ink and a bit more of magenta ink. Black was fine. So I go buy yellow ink, turn on the printer, it says it won't print without yellow ink (as expected), I replace the cartridge, and when it finishes doing it stuff, it says it won't print without cyan ink!!! It never warned me about that cartridge. According to the meter, it still had enough cyan ink not to even display a warning yet, but after the yellow cartridge setup there's not a single drop of cyan ink.

Could the printer quickly deplete the remaining cyan ink during the set up process of the yellow cartridge?

Thanks and regards,

Andrew

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

When you replace the cartridge the printer will go through the alignment process which consumes the ink to align the printer with the new cartridge.

I Suggest you replace the Cyan ink cartridge that should resolve the issue.

Well, I will indeed replace the cyan cartridge, no doubt about that. Basically my questions are:

-Does the printer only warn about one color at a time? Or else...

-Does the printer use other colors so much when setting up one cartridge so that it could deplete a color which wasn't even giving a warning yet?

As a note, the yellow cartidge was in "warning" state for several days, during which I was able to print many B&W documents. That's why I was confident I didn't still need to buy a cyan cartidge.

Yes, It should not get depleted.

Let's try cleaning the printhead and check if this works.

Use an automated tool to clean the printhead

Follow these steps to clean the printhead.

NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore normal print quality.

   CAUTION:

Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are not installed. To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead or that can damage the ink system, always replace ink cartridges as soon as possible, and always turn off the printer using the Power button.

  1. Load plain white paper into the tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon (). The Setup menu displays.

  3. Swipe the display to scroll to Tools, and then touch Tools.

  4. Touch Clean Printhead.

    NOTE:

Mechanical noises during the cleaning process are normal.

  5. When the first cleaning stage completes, a test page prints. Examine the test page for print quality.

    • If these steps resolved the issue, touch No to skip the other cleaning stages. You do not need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the issue persists, touch Yes to start the second cleaning stage.

  6. When the second cleaning stage completes, a test page prints. Examine the test page for print quality.

    • If these steps resolved the issue, touch No to skip the last cleaning stage. You do not need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the issue persists, touch Yes to start the last cleaning stage.

  7. When the last cleaning stage completes, a test page prints. Touch OK, and then examine the test page for print quality.

Check if the issue persists.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Have a great day!

Cheers:)

Well, it has never had a quality issue so far, so I think the printhead is ok. At this point, after installing a new cyan cartridge, I'm not sure what clearning the printhead could be beneficial for. I would do that if for some reason the print quality is not good. Otherwise, it seems to me that would be simply a waste of ink.
