Thank god I found this thread because I got the same exact problem with M281fdw. I don't remember seeing the resend error, but few weeks ago the printer just started completely jamming in the output bin. I took it apart and could not find any problems. I figured the fuser must be bad (though physically did not see any problems). But now it seems it was most likely caused by the firmware. I'll have to check what it's on when I get home, but since it stared few weeks ago, and had absolutely no problems before then, it must be the stupid firmware upgrade. Hopefully they'll release an update any day now.

On this, sorry for German, website (https://www.druckerchannel.de/artikel.php?ID=4148&t=hp_color_laserjet_pro_mfp_m479_und_m454_serie) they're stating that the M280 and M281 will get replaced by HP as they'll not be able to get updated via the upcoming firmware upgrade.
I'll try it anyhow and will let you know if I was successful or not - so still hope it's not bricked.....
The article mentioned that the support should be informed in the meantime, so calling in now, should get you further then the answer of "not willing to replace"
Good luck!

Yes, please, let us know. I guess we should all be calling them now. My printer was only jamming at the output bin, but when I tried resetting all settings as someone else suggested somewhere, I got the error 49. I could probably resolve it based on another thread, but what's the point if the printer will keep jamming... This way at least it's a solid indication the problem was caused by the firmware update.

I just tried calling HP support at [content removed]. After going through hoops in their phone menu, finally got the agent. I explained everything to her several times, and she kept insisting that because my printer is out of warranty, she would have to charge me a 1-time fee of I think $90 to downgrade the printer. After n-th time me trying to explain to her that that this printer was damaged by latest firmware HP released, and downgrade will not resolve it, she simply disconnected the call. Later she called me back and insisted on the same. I asked to talk to her supervisor. After a 10min wait, I got the supervisor whose name was Fritz. I explained everything to him again, and he still insisted they can't help me without paying $90 because the printer is out of warranty.
They purposely broke all our printers to make more revenue by us buying new printers or paying for their support.
Does anyone have a link for the class action suit?

Thank you for calling HP support and sharing this news, very upsetting. So ... if we each pay them $90, will they actually commit to fix the firmware that they pushed out to break the printers they sold us? We each invested $350 or so ... so it is upsetting that their stance seems to mean that their products are only good for 1 year (= the warranty period). What nonsense. If they ake the decision to not fix their broken firmware "upgrade", I vow to never spend 1 more $ with HP. I was already becoming skeptical when they started forcing me to "login" anytime I wanted to use my locally-connected printer (that I own). Seems like the company is devolving ...

In retrospect, the investment was closer to $600, after accounting for the toner I bought to have on-hand. So HP seems to be telling their customers that they should think twice before investing in HP systems, since there is no assurance that they won't break their own products. As a point of reference, I still have an old Dell laptop that I bought over 16 years ago that I am still using, despite out-of-date software and operating system. HP is clearly not a proponent of open systems nor backward compatibility with their legacy products. BAD FORM.

Seems you got a bargain price. The M281 printer we bought for the office in late 2019 was $550 on Amazon, not counting ink. 2 weeks ago just bought a new model on Amazon, the M283, also for $550. That is before I found out the firmware broke this printer.
I was able to fix the error 49 in the past hour (not without a lot of effort, because my board has no pins and no pads, just the little holes). So now the printer works and is at the April firmware. But the paper is still getting stuck in the output bin. Now I'm investigating this solenoid someone had mentioned earlier. I just wish there was more info on it.

I'm happy to say that after fixing the error 49. I was also able to fix paper jamming in the upper bin. My M281fdw printer is now fully functional. It's all explained here in this thread:
The hell with HP support and engineering.
