We have had a our printer for about 6 years and it has worked fine the entire time. Recently, however, we tried to replace the ink cartridges and ran into some problems. When we insert the cartridges, both the display and the utility screen on the computer show that the cartridges are "used, refilled, or counterfeit". We have tried all the troubleshooting solutions online and have come to the conclusion that the only thing to do is to get it serviced. However, at this point, with it being as old as it relatively is, we are wondering if this is the best course of action. Does anyone have any ideas? Would you recommend getting it serviced or simply replaced? Thank you for your help!

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

Sorry, but I don't have very good news for you ...

I used the very same HP printer for years and then, one day, it prompted me to align the print cartridges -- which I'd done numerous times before, without incident.  But ... it kept doing this over and over.  So, being the fool I was, I shelled out a LOT of $$$ for a new set of printheads -- which, of course DID NOT fix the problem.

This started an ongoing conversation with HP in which I learned the following:

1) HP will NOT service the printer, period.

2) No one else (including repair shops that had serviced HP products) would service the printer, either. They said that HP would not supply them the parts they needed for repairs.

Seeing as I now had an unrepairable printer, I bought a newer one -- HP 8620 -- and that was a good decision.

So basically, unless you can find someone to service it, you're in the same situation I was ...

Good Luck

Wow, thank you for that quick response as I have something I need to print today. Thank you for letting me know the reality that I need a replacement and yes, that the $92 I spent on new ink cartridges is a loss as your printer head replacement was. Thank you for taking the time to help me.
