Microsoft Windows 11

My Smart Tank 6001 printer stopped planting cyan even though the tank is full.  So after doing all 3 levels of print head cleaning in the HP Smart app it still wouldn't print.  So I bought a new colored print head and when I open the lid of the printer the print head will not move and the orange exclamation mark is illuminated.  I followed all the steps in the virtual assistant and even tried moving the print head when the device is unplugged with no luck.  How do I go about replacing the print head on this printer??

Hi @carkah,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the inability to move the print head when opening the lid, combined with the orange exclamation mark, suggests that the printer is encountering a hardware issue. This could be due to the print head carriage being stuck, a sensor issue, or the printer detecting an unresolved error.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot and replace the print head:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. Check if the print head moves when you open the lid.

2. Check for Obstructions

  • Open the printer lid and inspect the print head path.
  • Ensure there are no pieces of paper, debris, or ink residue blocking the carriage.
  • Gently try to move the print head manually while the printer is off. Do not force it if it resists.

3. Resolve the Orange Exclamation Mark

The orange exclamation mark often indicates an error condition. Here’s how to address it:

  • Check for Error Messages: If the printer screen or HP Smart app provides more details about the error, follow the guidance.
  • Check Ink and Print Heads: Ensure the print head and ink cartridges are seated correctly. Reseating them may resolve the error.

4. Replace the Print Head

If the print head still does not move, try these steps to replace it:

  1. Open the printer lid. If the print head doesn't move, attempt to gently guide it to the replacement position after ensuring there is no obstruction.
  2. Follow the printer's manual for replacing the print head. Typically, it involves:
    • Removing the old print head carefully by lifting the latch.
    • Inserting the new print head and ensuring it clicks into place.
  3. Close the lid and allow the printer to initialize.

5. Reset the Printer

If the issue persists:

  • Perform a factory reset on the printer. Consult the manual for instructions or:
    • Press and hold the Cancel and Resume buttons (or similar combination) for 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconfigure the printer.

I hope this helps.
