HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One

Hello folks,

I accidentally installed the firmware upgrade and have tried all possible tricks to be able to make refilled cartridges work. The ideas included

1. Replacing the cartridge after it detects an OEM cartridge withing 30 secs (the lockout bypass)

2. i tried hard booting the printer (as explained by an HP support engineer)

I hate the fact that HP never told this restriction when we purchased the printer and all of a sudden we cannot use the printer. Even while installing the firmware, it did not mention about this restriction - All they said was - it improves performance. Some **bleep** - their printers are the slowest/lamest and hence deserve the low price that we end up paying. Now they are trying to recover their discounts through forcing us to buy their cartridges - We do that anyway - just that after we run out of a couple of refills.

Any ideas friends?

@Niraj2020 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are unable to print using the refill ink cartridges.

Yes, you can. But do you want to? Buyers Laboratory Inc. tested the performance of Original HP ink cartridges vs. remanufactured (refilled) brands. The results: Original HP ink cartridges far surpassed ink refills in both print quality and reliability.

  • 37% of tested refilled ink cartridges failed during use or right out of the box. Original HP ink cartridges worked every time.*

  • Original HP ink cartridges printed up to twice the pages—on average—than refilled cartridges tested.*

  • Refilled ink cartridges tested produced more than 18 times more wasted pages – on average – than Original HP ink cartridges.*

  • When tested, refilled ink cartridges offer no cost per page advantage over Original HP ink.*

*Based on a Buyers Laboratory Inc. 2014 study commissioned by HP for the on-average performance of cartridges refilled and remanufactured by leading refill service providers compared to Original HP ink cartridges (60XL Black, 60XL Color, 61XL Black, 61XL Color, 74XL Black, 75XL Color, 564XL Black, 564XL Cyan, 564XL Magenta, 564XL Yellow, 950XL Black, 951XL Cyan, 951 XL Magenta and 951XL Yellow ) sold in North America.

I would suggets you install the HP original ink cartridges and check.

@Praveen196

You should let the users decide this - and not force it upon them. You have not given me a solution and instead you are pontificating on why we should use genuine cartridges - which is shameful and frustrating.

When we purchased the printer, you never told us that we will not be able to use refilled cartridges. When u installed firmware you never told us. We did not ask you to sell your printers at a price lower than market and then try to recover the profit through cartridges.

The response below just shows your arrogance but I like it. It confirms why I will never buy an HP printer again - even if HP gives it for free. No one wants their freedom to be constrained and you just did that in a free country like USA.

I understand your concerns.

In that case, I would suggets you contact our phone support and check for the support option. They will help you.

Here is how you can get in touch with phone support.

1)Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2)Select the product type.

3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.

4)Select the country from the drop-down.

5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

We are experiencing longer than expected wait times to reach an agent due to the CoViD-19 impact and there might have been issues in you getting the expected resolution on the issue.

Have a nice day!!

@Praveen196  Again - instead of posting a solution here - you want me to talk to telephonic support. Basically you are trying to tire me out - You should really introspect whether this is the quality of customer service you want to provide.

Feel really sad for HP and its future..

@Praveen196 - I have replied to your email asking for details

I did get another response from an "expert" which I have been requested not to post here - so I am not doing it. It does not really address my ask and it went tangential - giving me options that I already know . Lets address the real issue here and not give me alternatives.

The issue still stays open as far as I am concerned.
