HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer

I'm receiving a 'Supply System Problem' error and have run a variety of troubleshooting tips - turned the printer off, updated the firmware, replaced the ink cartridges, wiped the area where the cartridges are connected, etc. What else can I do to solve this issue?

Hi @Lulabelled,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you’ve already tried basic troubleshooting steps like turning the printer off, updating the firmware, replacing the ink cartridges, and cleaning the cartridge contacts, here are a few additional things you can try to resolve the "Supply System Problem" error on your HP OfficeJet 8740.

Check for Obstructions

  • Open the printer's access door and carefully check for any paper jams or debris that might be obstructing the supply system.
  • Look for any loose paper or small bits of paper that might have gotten stuck around the ink cartridges or printhead.

Re-seat the Ink Cartridges

  • Even if you've replaced the ink cartridges, it's worth removing and re-seating them to ensure they are properly installed. Sometimes a cartridge can be slightly misaligned, which may trigger errors.
  • Press down on the cartridges firmly to make sure they are securely in place.

Reset the Printer

  • Perform a partial reset of the printer:
    1. With the printer turned on, unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for about 60 seconds to allow the printer's memory to clear.
    3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
    4. This can sometimes clear any lingering errors that might be stuck in the system.

Clean the Printhead

  • The issue might be related to a dirty printhead, which is part of the supply system.
    1. Check if your printer allows you to clean the printhead manually or through the printer’s software.
    2. If the software suggests a cleaning cycle, perform it.
    3. Alternatively, carefully clean the printhead with a lint-free cloth soaked in distilled water.

Try a Different Set of Ink Cartridges

  • If you haven't already, try using a different set of ink cartridges to rule out the possibility of faulty cartridges. Sometimes even new cartridges can be defective.

Check for Firmware or Software Updates

  • While you mentioned updating the firmware, ensure that you’ve installed the latest version of the firmware available on HP’s website. Sometimes a more recent patch may address specific supply system errors.
  • Check your printer's software for any available updates and install them if necessary.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • HP offers a Print and Scan Doctor tool that can diagnose and fix common printer issues, including supply system errors.
    1. Download and run the tool from HP's support site.
    2. Follow the instructions to let the tool check for and fix any issues with your printer.

Factory Reset

  • If the error persists after all troubleshooting steps, you may want to try a factory reset as a last resort. This will erase all settings, so make sure to note down your printer settings beforehand:
    1. Go to the printer’s control panel.
    2. Find the Restore Factory Defaults option in the settings menu.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
