I'll start with I am using after market ink because charging double for ink and setting printers to only use a specific kind is a behavior frowned upon by consumers.
I continue to get a supply memory error when I replace the toner. I have tried multiple cartridges, reset everything, made sure there were no plastic pieces on the cartridge still, made sure the cartridge protection is off, etc.
How do I bypass this error message so that I can use the printer?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
This is a great place to get support, find answers to your technical queries.
I understand that the printer has an error message on the control panel.
Need not worry I'll be happy to assist you.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Did you do any hardware changes in the printer?
How long are you facing this issue?
Did you try with a different toner?
However, I suggest you do a Hard Reset
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue. ( Remove the toners )
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
(9) Clean the contacts of the toner and install the toner.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Clear the print jobs for the computer.
Keep me posted, how it goes!

@RAKJ1788. your response here is exactly why most consumers come here, get frustrated with illusive and untrustworthy HP employee responses, and simply leave to go search elsewhere for their answers. The problem here is a decade old issue that HP keeps throwing back in everyone's faces. You want consumers to use YOUR HP BRANDED TONER @ 3 or 4 times the cost of any other toner out there. This is a ridiculous mentality at best and exactly why HP (whom I've personally and professionally preferred for many years) has now taken a backseat to Dell in quality of products and WAY at the bottom of the list of all manufacturers in consumer satisfaction.
We want your equipment but we don't want the crazy-high prices that go along with using your proprietary toners. Why is is necessary for HP to put a chip in a toner cartridge that tells them whether or not it's an HP branded toner? No different than me buying a Chevrolet or Ford and the manufacturer telling me I can only use 1 specific tire-brand on my vehicle. The keyword here being MY. I bought it, it's mine, I own it; I should be able to use remanufactured toner or even another manufacurer's toner in these machines.
I came here trying to figure out how to get around the supply memory error. This is not some cheap disposable printer, it's an MFP M281FDW that cost ME over $325 each to purchase 10 of them. Now I'm finding out that these are basically JUNK unless I use HP BRANDED OVERLY-PRICED toner cartridges. This is the last time I"ll ever purchase HP equipment.

I have the exact same issue.
Please provide the solution, why is it a private solution? I need my printer to run asap, I did not anticipate this issue when the toner says it is compatible with this model.
How do i remove the Memory Supply Error!???

the solution wasn't private, my information I sent to them was private. Matter of fact, there was absolutely no response to my request for assistance but then again I expect nothing less. The solution is: Contact whoever the vendor of your toner cartridges, let them know the firmware on your printer was auto-updated by HP without your knowledge and tell them you want toner cartridges that support the lastest firmware updates from HP. IMO, HP does this to trick consumers into purchasing over-priced toner directly from them.

This mentality and attitude to customers is absolutely crazy.....
I'm in the same position with a printer that can't be used. new compatible cartridges that were working fine then all of a sudden stopped working!
I'm responsible for purchasing for multiple sites and have always had a preference for HP for their durability and longevity but toner/ink has always been a joke.
So i have a printer which has only just been bought and now can't be used......
These insane practices affect our operability and productivity which is part of the reason for buying HP in the first place.
If there's no solution to this then maybe i should just return the printer and go for something more user friendly!
I've had a dell laser printer for years now of my own at home and it never lets me down or messes me about with toner issues................
Get a grip HP and start listening to your consumers NOT the £/$ signs

Here is the solution I came up with, that I'm sure HP does not approve of. There is a little chip on the printer cartridge. I removed that chip and put it in the after market cartridge. It won't tell me how much ink is left, but, I can use the after market cartridges without an issue. Good luck to everyone with this issue.
