HP office jet pro 8740

HP Office Jet Pro 8740 was purchased July 2018 and was used until Dec. 2018. It was placed into storage until now. After hooking it up, the warning message was that it was out of ink. I replaced all cartridges and now get a different error message, " There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing cartridge. If message reappears record message and contact HP".

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the supply error message on your Officejet Pro 8740.  Before considering step 4 I would suggest the following: If the printer was unplugged before the printer had time to properly park the printheads the printhead may have dried out.  In this case, I would suggest removing the ink cartridges, then remove the printhead and soak it as described in the post here.

Assuming the printer was properly stored (cleaned before storage, ink installed, upright, in a clean, cool, and dark location):

You may need to run the cleaning cycle more than once (maybe more than twice - maybe more than three times...).

Side Bar:

The document mentions the print head assembly (M0H91A).  Parts are no longer available from HP.  I do see that eBay lists the print head assembly and Setup cartridges as a set.  Regardless of where (if) you purchase, make sure the print head assembly kit includes the Setup cartridges.

In my opinion, this is Nice printer - I do hope you can get it working again.

Thanks, looks like Ill need to replace print head. The cleaning of print head is not allowed when current error message is up.

You are welcome.

OK.

Assuming you can get it, the printhead is likely not a small investment.

Before you do that - let's ask a printer hardware expert.  Smiling.

@Terry109  - to help others who may have the same issue, could you let us know which steps actually resolved your issue?  Did you need to replace the printhead, or did soaking the printhead or some prior step resolve the issue?

Just installed new print head and set-up cartridges and now error states, "new and unused  cartridges must be used for startup". i'm missing something.

Did you get the printhead and cartridges from HP or a third party such as eBay or Amazon? What are the markings on the cartridges - do they say setup?
