Intel NUC6i5SYH
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have received this LaserJet Pro M1217nfw from my local Freecycle group. with no instructions or installation disks.

Totally fed up with InkJet machines which don't like my infrequent use and use more ink clearing blocked print heads than printing!

First question concerns the notification (top right) about Windows 10 update Issues on HP Computer/printers.

Is this a "global issue?

Will it concern me as my main machine is an Intel NUC6i5SYH self build from June 2016 currently running Windows 10 Pro version: 1909 O.S. Build: 10363.1016?

"Updates" tells me as of this morning KB4570723 is awaiting download and install.

I will not be installing Win 10 ver. 2004 for a little while yet!

I found this driver page which seems to relate to my printer:

Also this Guide/Manual

Having consulted this page I'm pointed at the "Full Feature Driver"

All very overwhelming.

I really expected to be able to just "Plug&Play", ...with a few extra tweaks  maybe!

I'm still totally confused if this printer is capable of independent WiFi operation, ie can I separate it from my PC, and have it operate just from a power socket once the WiFi has been set up or  does it need to be physically connected to my primary PC?

So many questions, ...totally confused!

Help! 🤔

Hi,

The printer is wireless-enabled and may be connected by using the software installation wizard.

Download and run the latest Full Feature Software below:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL32629/Im-80811-7/HP_M1130_M1210_MFP_Full_Solution-v2018...

If the software installation wizard won't launch once extracted, Click the Start button and type %temp% into the search bar, then open the shown Temp folder.

Open the latest HP installation folder which begins with 7z (e.g. 7zs1234)
Double-click HpSetup.exe and follow the installation wizard.

Be sure to follow the screen by selecting the M1217fnw model and a wireless connection, you will be prompt to temporarily connect a USB cable to set up the wireless connection for the printer.

Hi ShlomiL, Thanks for your quick reply.

...just wondering where the reply I read earlier from "Repairatrouper" has gone!

I've downloaded the software from your link and I am installing according to the WiFi option.

Got as far as power "On" and here my experience differs from the video.

I'm told to  use the arrow buttons to select Language and location, but the display shows a green LED  "Ready Light", The Attention Light was lit at first, but that's gone out now.

In the LCD display screen I'm seeing Two lines of the same text "No Strings in RO", and the WiFi button is flashing.

Not sure what to do now!

Stumbling around in the dark here!

I have resorted to following this manual which suggested attaching by USB, that has downloaded and installed drivers but at the end, every link in the so called "Help Navigation" takes me to the end of the internet!

I think maybe I need to undo this mischief as it hasn't helped and just serves to confuse both me and the PC, but not sure how to go about that!

Some good seems to have come from the above "stumbling", I've just noticed that it has at some point printed a "Quick Reference" sheet for the control panel buttons and lights!

WiFi Button continues to flash and the LCD Display still bears the duplicated injunction "No Strings in RO", what ever that means I suspect it does not bode well!

Mystified!

Oh dear!

Maybe I should just wait for help!

I seem to be creating more problems than solutions.

Both Attention and WiFi lights are flashing and I have no idea why or what to do about them.

No idea why my screenshot has become un-viewable, It was just fine when I posted it!!!

I NEED HELP HERE.

Three times I have uploaded  a screenshot and three times it has failed

HOW does one achieve this task?

Why am I seeing a blue banner as the bottom of my screen saying:-

"Didn't find what you were looking for, ...Ask the Community"

...I thought I was posting on the community board 🙄

I don't understand what is going on.

Oh! this is real Alice in Wonderland!, One of my screen shot attempts has materialised!

Better quit whilst I'm ahead!

More notices!

Upon closing the above Sys 32 notice, I get this one:

Capture2.JPG

Do I click on Yes, No, or Go away (X)?

Why are these things so, so difficult?

I have I think installed two sets of drivers:

One from the downloaded software and one that was offered when I finally resorted to plugging in  the USB Connection!

Every attempt at setting up a WiFi connection has failed.

I have pressed the WPS button on my router, selected the offered SSID which is the 2.4GHz ( my PC is connected to the 5Ghz band) just why that is not detected I don't know, but non the less, the printer refuses to connect despite me manually inputting both the SSID and the password.

The LCD display continuously shows "No Strings in RO" on  the top row, and now that same message on the bottom row alternates with an I.P. addres which when entered into my Chrome Browser returns:-

"No webpage was found for the web address:  http://xxx,x,x,xx/SSI/index.htm  HTTP ERROR 404 HTTP ERROR 404".

I have no idea what to do and will have to disconnect the printer regardless of what mayhem that may cause if no one can give me some advice in the next hour or two. 😫

Watched this today which advocates the drivers that  "Repairatrouper" suggested in his post which mysteriously disappeared!!

I really don't want to make even more of a mess of this installation than I already have, so I'll wait until someone passes by with some helpful suggestions.

I am concerned that the display screen has only ever shown two different alphanumeric strings:

The first one on both the upper and the lower lines "No Strings in RO", I have mentioned that before but have received no explanation of the cryptic message!

the second message occurred at some point after I inserted the USB cable and was on just the lower line, the upper line was still concerned about the absence of "strings" in RO!

It was an IP address which my browser tells me can't be reached, this seems to be a thread (string)...pun! 😉

Most of the links so far generated by either the printer or the driver software achieve the same unhelpful result.

I did however solve the above problem, the window which appeared upon clicking the "View Wireless User Guide Addendum" was so small that the content pane was totally out of view, enlarging it revealed the full content and navigability!

Purely academic since I have no idea how to invoke set-up today and don't feel confident to proceed until I am better informed.

Sum total of acquired wisdom so far, ...the printer works but only if connected by USB.

Good news, but not useful if a wireless connection is not possible.

Hi,

No Strings in RO indicate the hardware is in some kind of an error state.

Please try plugging the USB cable and follow below firmware update to re-push the firmware and check if that may allow to complete the update and recover the hardware error:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL32625/bi-95165-10/HP_M1212_M1213_M1219_M1217_M1218_FW_U...

Once completing the steps, either successfully or not, please unplug the USB first of all and remove any existing instance of your printer from Start > Settings (gear icon) > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

Open the software installation again and click on Install Printer Software, as marked on red.

Capture3.JPG

Then, follow the steps on the screen by selecting the M1217fnw printer model and select a wireless connection.

You will be prompt to temporarily connect the USB during the process, be sure not to plug it till being told to do so, then select your wireless network.

Allow the installation to complete and see if that may make any difference and if you may print.

Once the installation completes, try printing and check.

If you may now print with the driver installed, please try connecting the USB cable again to add a second queue for the printer, then select the USB queue while running below update again and check if it may complete:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL32625/bi-95165-10/HP_M1212_M1213_M1219_M1217_M1218_FW_U...

Hope that may help,

Shlomi
