Can someone with an HP Color LaserJet Pro 4201dn (or similar) answer a question for me?
Does the printer report a warning condition (in EWS) when tray 1 is closed?
I see a "Warning" in the Paper/Trays are in the EWS (Windows and macOS) and a "Printer is out of paper" in print dialogs on iOS and macOS.
While technically true (the tray does not have any paper in it) this is the most common state of tray 1 which is mostly used to print on specialty paper such as letterhead, coloured or textured paper, envelopes, or paper of a different size than is loaded in tray 2.
HP support has indicated that the problem may be resolved by replacing the printer but I'd like to hear from someone else using this printer before I start the exchange process (which I suspect will not resolve the issue)
Thanks in advance...

Can you clarify, you are getting this message even when the printer is idle? Or do you get the message when you have a sent a print job?

The warning is there all the time if tray 1 is closed, even when the printer is idle. If the printer has been power cycled the warning may no appear until a job is sent but once the warning appears it’s there all the time.
If the tray is opened and paper is inserted the warning goes away.
