I've wasted about half my pack of your expensive photo paper just trying to get a few simple 5x7 prints done. I'm increasingly upset and how pointless these settings are. Why would this app ask me to choose paper size, photo size, orientation, margins, fill/scale to fit, if it's just going to ignore it all and print, seemingly at random?

Here's what I'm trying.

  • I remove my 8.5x11 letter sized paper. I put 5x7 in its place.
  • I move the paper alignment slider to 5x7.
  • 5x7 Photo paper is loaded into main tray, portrait, oriented the way indicated on the printer. (Glossy side out)
  • I try to print a 5x7 using any dialogue that might give me a fleeting chance of hope.
  • I setup the print on my pc using first the HP app, then tried the system dialogue, then chrome or any other app dialogue just hoping to get it to work without any good results. Configured as such (with variances based on where I'm printing from) in all:

image.png

  • Seems like that oughta do it, right?
    • (it doesn't)
  • Photo then prints out either: a corner of the image as if it was a 8.5x11 photo on a 5x7 without any scaling whatsoever (hmmmm)
  • or photo prints as 5x7, but centered on what it thinks is a 8.5x11 sheet so I get ~2" of blank, white margin before the top-left corner of the image prints.  (hmmmm^2)

I have rebooted printer and pc, updated drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled everything related to HP, and then further to REMOVE EVERY PRINT SERVICE THERE IS as this thread suggested: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Can-t-print-to-5x7-paper-im...

NOTHING. No change.

the only step left is to go to best buy and buy a printer from a company that works. And I don't want to do that. I hate best buy. PLEASE.

HELP ME NOT HAVE TO GO TO BEST BUY.

  • Printing from: Win 11, latest updates
  • Printing to: DeskJet 4100
  • Tried printing using: HP SmartApp (smart is being generous here, lets be honest), Windows Photos Print Dialogue, Chrome Print dialogue. also tried printing from a web based photoshop like app. With and without the "allow app to change settings" box checked.
  • Images are PNG format, 300DPI, 5x7.5" and 5x7",

Please. For the love of dogs everywhere. Do not give me a canned response asking me to apply the settings above. I'll implode, and that will be on your hands.

Welcome to the HP Community --

If you have not done so,

Reload the 5x7 inch paper into the printer

Reference:  User Guide  > Starting on Page 11

Next,

Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

Use the HP Smart App > Printer Settings > Advanced

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Home Page / menu > Printer Settings > Advanced

HP_Smart_Win_Main_Menu_5HP_Smart_Win_Main_Menu_5

OR

Use your browser and the printer's IP address

Reference:  User Guide  > Starting on Page 17

Set the paper size default (likely for the Medium paper?) to the paper size you are using for this job.

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Reminder

HP Smart Mobile requires that paper size / type is adjusted before the content is opened to be printed.

Example - Microsoft Photos - 5x7 inch

Sample shows using "Letter" size paper.

To print on 5x7 inch photo paper:

Select Photo Paper, Paper Size = 5x7 in.,  plus Photo Size = "Full Page" or "5x7 in"

Hey there! Thanks for the swift reply.

the HP app was a non starter, no advanced settings appears under printer settings:

thisisstupid21_1-1696988528294.png

No biggie, went to the IP:

thisisstupid21_0-1696988492442.png

I don't see the tray settings. These are the settings that were already in place, so I would think the 5x7 would work, however, nothing auto detects like it says it should.

For good measure, checked to see if the firmware is up to date and it was:

thisisstupid21_2-1696988838051.png

Tried using the same HP smart print app, but same thing as with my original post, no dice. I don't have multiple paper sources, just Main Tray.

Would moving the photo paper to the top area, where I would normally copy from, make a difference? I would imagine not. I don't want to waste more paper if I can avoid it. Hopefully we can figure out something else to try.

Sorry for the delay -- I was not online yesterday...

Your first image was removed from pubic view to protect your privacy.

In that image, the installation status shows as "Not installed".

Try / Consider:

Open

HP printer turns off unexpectedly or repeatedly

Step 2 - Reset the printer

Questions

Do you have the Full Feature Software installed in Programs and Features?

If not, please do install the printer software.

Video - Install Software

HP Deskjet Plus 4152 |4155 |4158: Download & Install HP Full featured Software on a Win 10 computer

The installation of the full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop:

Printer Assistant

HP Scan

>>> Open the Printer Assistant > tab Scan Manage Scan to Computer Enable

and

When you use the HP Smart application for Windows -- are you signed into the application?

How is the printer connected to your network?

AND

Are you running a Dual Band Network?  (2.4GHz and 5GHz)

AND

Is the printer connected to your network using a separate SSID named network for the frequency / speed you are using to connect the printer to the network?

Is the printer on the same network as your computer?

==================================================================

Assuming the printer software is installed and the printer is connected to the network as expected,

If you have not done so, you can try changing the connection type to TCP/IP.

Not sure that is the source of the problem but it can help and will not make things worse.

Method - Create TCP IP port (InkJet Printer) - Change connection type

Method - Create / Change-to TCP/IP port

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

Find the printer's IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address

Next,

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer > Printer Properties

OR
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click the printer > Left-Click Printer Properties

Tab Ports
Click Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port

Select New Port and follow the instructions
Type in the correct IP address for the printer

Dual Band Network - Considerations

Reminders

Do not ignore your router --

A router that is weak, outdated, poorly located, or incorrectly configured can cause all sorts of odd network behavior issues.

If the printer supports it, connecting using Ethernet is generally a better choice.

Some printers, particularly older models, only support Wireless at 2.4GHz

Some printers support Wireless at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz – but not at the same time

Regardless, if the printer won't work or cannot connect to your 5GHz SSID named network, connect to the 2.4GHz network.

If you are running a Dual Band Network,

Check that the router is set up to broadcast all frequencies it supports.

Next,

If your router supports it,

On your router:

Create a separate SSID named network for each frequency supported by the router

What?  Create one SSID named network for 5GHz and one SSID named network for 2.4GHz

and

Connect the printer to the SSID named network on the frequency / band you want it to use.

In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

Example – EWS – IPv4

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Ethernet

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wired (802.3) > IPv4 Configuration

Wireless

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

As Available:

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password

Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.

Note:   It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.
