HP ENVY 5030 All-in-One Printer

I recently updated three applications on my Apple iPad around 4 - 5 days ago.

iPad OS to 16.1

Apple Pages v 12.2

HP Smart v 9.6

Now I am unable to print documents from Pages using my iPad (old or newly written) via HP Smart printer.  I am now greeted with the ridiculous message “File Type Not Supported” when [^] -> Print with HP Smart (the only print option from the only  3 options).

Photos do print easily and [^] delivers a 9 item menu choice which includes a generic Print option (which always worked before (now not included in menu accessed from Pages which only has three options ) and was an alternative print option) to the now suspect Print with HP Smart.

So hands up - what or who is causing the issue.  I am copying this against the two app vendors and against the app store reviews as well as the iOS developers. Please corroborate and get this sorted it could well be a composite issue of course.

I have in the meantime developed a workaround.  Ridiculously if I copy a Pages document into Apple Notes I am then able to print from there!

PS:

The issue also appears on my iPhone (and my wife’s) but on checking on my old Mac running mcOS Big Sur v 11.7.1 printing from Pages for Mac v 12.2 works using cmdP.  However HP Smart for desktop is NOT installed!

The Apple iWorks Team have been helpful and advise:

“The toolbar in iPadOS 16.1 and later dynamically changes based on available width, which can be impacted by multitasking or by the screen size and orientation of your iPad.

— If you see the document name in the toolbar,[is top left for me on iPad] tap it to open the document menu, choose Print, then choose your desired print options - [works for me rather than HP Smart].

— If you don’t see the document name in the toolbar, tap “...” in the toolbar to open the More menu, choose Print, then choose your desired print options”.

Pages documents per se are apparently in a zip format designated as “Pages Document” which HP Smart does not recognise and creates the error message “File Type Not Supported”.  HP NEED TO MAKE THEIR SOFTWARE APPLE PAGES COMPATIBLE. I only have this HP software installed because I need it and and an account to be able to use the Scan function!

Documents can be converted to other formats but Apple’s print solution involves no extra manipulation!

No response from HP!  HP 0/10 Apple 10/10.

Sweet!  Thanks so much.  Worked for me.  So, seems that I may not need the HP Smart app anymore?  Maybe so for scanning...  Thx again!

@Commoner66.  Pleased to be able to help by coming up with a solution.  Like yourself the only reason I have the HP Smart software installed is because the printer will not allow me to  scan documents without it and an account!   It is disturbing that there is no response from HP with respect to their App not recognising or supporting  Apple Page format documents.

Problem is that whereas before everything worked fine, docs In my Pages App no longer show an option for “Print” only “Print with HP Smart” which shows the same problem of file not recognised you experienced. Can you help please?

HP have just released an HP Smart update version 9.7.1.  With respect to the printing of Apple Pages documents - guess what NOT  FIXED!

HP Smart still does not recognise and creates the error message “File Type Not Supported”.  HP NEED TO MAKE THEIR SOFTWARE APPLE PAGES COMPATIBLE. I only have this HP software installed because I need it and  an account to be able to use the Scan function!  Otherwise totally useless - not befitting what, for me, is an otherwise good printer.

Have you checked out Apple’s solution as posted earlier? Instead of trying to print via HP Smart software which still, even with the latest update, throws up the dreaded “File type not supported”.  Apple say instead of using the [^]  option click on the name of your Pages document (left of screen) and a drop down menu should appear with a generic print option (other than the HP Print). This works for me.  Apple are guilty of not identifying this change in their current Pages manual.  They advise that if “print” does not appear by this means to then click on […] on the right of the screen and the option should be there.

I would actually take off the HP Smart app except that it is needed, along with an HP account , to be able to use the scan function - remember the days when scan was a button on the printer itself!

@KenCarr

In conjunction with  two my previous postings I attach two screen dumps which may clarify the solution for you.

Do not select the “Print with HP Smart” under [^] on the right as the  Pages zip type format (unlike Notes, email and Photos) is not now recognised by HP and returns the error message “File type not supported”.
Instead click on the document title on the left and select “PRINT” - this works for Pages and other file types.

Solution doesn’t work, there is no “print” option using pages, only HPSmart Print, that isn’t that smart.

Apple suggest that although HP Smart Print is under the drop down menu on the right from [^] the generic print is now on the left drop down menu under the document title (see my screen dumps) if it isn’t they suggest trying under the […] on the right of the menu bar.
