My printer has black vertical streaks on copies. Color copies are fine, black printing is fine. The streaks only happen on black ink copies. I have changed the ink cartridge but it didn't help.

Hi @HPCustomer6,

I am rb011,

@Drakster is out of the office for a couple days. I would like to continue helping you with the copy issue.

I see that you mentioned having the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer and the vertical black lines only happen when doing black copies. It almost sounds like the scan bulb might no be getting calibrated properly.

To make sure the scan bulb gets calibrated properly, remove any papers loaded on the scanner glass and make sure all lids and doors are closed before performing a Power Reset on the printer.

Allow the printer to return to its idle state before opening the lid to place a paper on the glass.

If that does not help and you have followed the Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans support document, there is likely an issue with the scanner bulb and speaking with HP Tech Support would be the next step to finding a resolution to this issue.

What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.

Hi @HPCustomer6,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you're experiencing "Vertical streaks on black copy only". I would be happy to look into this with you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

In order for me to assist you better, I will need to know the full name and product number of your printer.

In the meantime, I will assume that you meant the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Series.

Are you seeing these lines from the automatic document feeder (ADF) or the flatbed scanner glass?

  • Copy using the ADF. What were the results?
  • Copy using the flatbed scanner glass. What were the results?

Please follow the steps within this guide:
Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans

If you need further assistance, please let me know the following information above or post back with the results. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck! Smiley Happy

Thank you for the quick response.

1. My printer is the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Series.

2. I am seeing the lines on both the ADF and the document feeder when I press Copy - Black.

3. I have followed the steps on the guide: Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans

4. I have replaced the black ink cartridge, still get the lines

5. My current solution is to copy all documents using Copy - Color. Works fine

Hi @HPCustomer6,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Generally, this issue is not related to print quality. I do not recommend replacing the ink cartridges. This type of problem is usually caused by something on the glass casting a shadow.
NOTE: If any part of the scanner glass or scanner lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the ADF scanner glass strip, the white plastic ADF strip on the underside of the scanner lid, the underside of the scanner lid, and the scanner glass.

I see that you get lines when using the document feeder (ADF). Do you also get lines when copying from the flatbed scanner glass?

  • Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (don't use a power bar or a surge. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.protector).

In addition, please clarify which HP Officejet 8600 Series Printer you have. There might be a firmware update available.
For example:

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One - N911n
  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer series - N911
  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a
  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
  • HP Officejet Pro K8600 Printer
  • HP Officejet Pro K8600dn Printer

Please click the link below to determine which one you have.

In the meantime, I would repeat the cleaning instructions in the guide above.

If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.

Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.
Check Warranty Status: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/wc/public/home
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers.

1. The model number is HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

2. I tried all of the steps with no result.

3. It does a beautiful job copying black and white when I use the Copy - color setting. I am going to use that setting until I run into additional problems or use up all of my ink then figure out what to do next.

Thank you for your help.
