HP OfficeJet 4650
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Trying to print from my MacBook Pro to OfficeJet 4650, but when I try to add the printer it says "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device. Unable to communicate with the printer at this time." I managed to add it using the printer's IP address and after trying to print something the status of the print job it says "Stopped- 1 page". I downloaded the HP Smart app and am able to print reports from there. I'm also able to print the Self Test Page from the embedded Web Server.

I've reset the printing system, reset the actual printer, reconnected to the wifi, connected via USB, downloaded the software and drivers from the HP website. I honestly have no idea what else to try.

@printerproble12, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

If you are able to access the EWS page of the printer from your MAC, it means both the devices are connected.

Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the MAC

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Update the printer firmware

Go to Setup > Tools > Update the printer

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Try reinstalling the printer using AirPrint drivers as shown in step 2 of this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
